Making Someone Else’s Christmas Better Seems To Be The Best Gift Of All

Making Someone Else’s Christmas Better Seems To Be The Best Gift Of All

Ah… Christmas time, It's the one day out of the year we all look forward to no matter the circumstances. Sure, it can be an extremely stressful time leading up to it, but the end game makes all of the stress worthwhile. You visit with family and friends and enjoy not only one of the holiest times of the year, but you also get a chance to not worry about day to day life for at least one day and just enjoy your family's company.

The problem is not everyone has a great Christmas. There are children that aren't receiving toys, some people are homeless, and others are starving. When you give, it not only makes you feel better but it makes someone else's Christmas a little brighter.

Now I'm in no way, shape, or form telling anyone what to do. I'm simply saying that we all need to take a little accountability and not lose sight that others are suffering while we are enjoying our Christmases. Here's a shocking number according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans there are 40,056 homeless veterans on any given night. This is just veterans and that in itself is tragic. These brave people fought for our country and are without homes. You can donate money to causes that will help find them food and shelter. You can contribute to toys for tots to help children who cannot receive toys. You can even volunteer at a shelter and help feed the homeless living there.

We need to focus on humanity and give what we can to others. If you are broke, you can give your time. People need other people whether we all admit it or not. Giving the gift of love to your fellow human being is the greatest gift you can give. You never know, that person or group might not have anyone, and they might be on the edge of giving up hope. Hope is one of the most powerful tools we have.

So, whenever you're unwrapping presents and spending time with your family, maybe we should all take a step back and realize how good we really have it. I hope that we can help others feel the joy that should be shared with everyone. 'Tis the season of giving, yes? I'm not perfect but I have given this year and want to give more. While people are fighting over a Christmas song, I'm worried about things that matter- those without homes, without food, and kids without toys. It's getting cold outside and I know people are freezing. Some are starving and need to go to that shelter for something to eat.

Even if you don't give to toys for tots, if you hear of a family that lost their home or couldn't afford toys for their kids, it doesn't mean you can't help them out and play Santa. If they have a lot of pride, surprise them on Christmas. The best presents of all come in the form of surprises and what are they to do then, take them back? You know deep down inside, they'd be overwhelmed with joy.

Having said all of this, if you cannot give anything material, just consider giving your time. We have other veterans in hospice that are dying and don't have family members even consider seeing them during the holidays. They'd appreciate your time. Everyone likes for someone to be there, especially during the holidays. If Kevin in "Home Alone 2" can give and make the Pigeon Lady's Christmas better, so can we for someone else.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
