Christmas is over now, and most of us have started hearing the tired New Years' resolution jokes. January 1st, there is a rush for gym memberships, diet systems, and financial programs. By February, everyone has returned to their pre-resolution ways.
I read a book by Charles Duhigg recently called “The Power of Habit”. If you have some habits you are looking to change in 2017, this is a great read. Throughout the book, Duhigg outlines a “simple” process for habit change. First, you have to identify the habit you want to change, and you have to be specific about the stressors that trigger that habit. Identify what you crave when you resort to that habit. Then, find a different reward system that will satisfy the craving, therefore replacing and alleviating the habit.
That was a very brief synopsis. Like I said, check out the book if you want a more in-depth and scientific psychological explanation. Here are some foolproof ways to make sure your 2017 resolutions stick.
1. Check your reasoning
Your reasons (i.e., wanting to lose weight to become skinny or to increase your life expectancy) create your mindset. Think wisely.
2. Make sure your goals are attainable
Having a large, big-picture goal like running a marathon or planting a church in Haiti is great. But figuring out the smaller, everyday, in-between steps will make it seem less daunting and help you accomplish that great big dream. In the words of Hannah Montana, “it’s the cliiiiiiiiiiimb”.
3. Get some accountability up in here!
Write it down. Say it out loud. Announce it on Facebook or Instagram or whatever brand of social media you use the most. Integrating your resolution into your lifestyle helps to make it a reality.
4. Like Nike says... Just Do It!
There is no tomorrow. There is only today. So get after it… life is short, but not too short to live the best one you can!
Happy New Year!!
