Making New Friends and Keeping The Old

Making New Friends and Keeping The Old
Curt Hamakawa

I have been in England for almost a month now with 12 other Western New England Students. Coming into this, I did not really know any of them and had only seen them in class or in passing. I was mainly focused on the fact that it would be difficult to leave my best friends at school. The hard thing is that they are all at Western New England enjoying themselves without me. I know they miss me and I certainly miss them and so that is tough. But here I am, a month in, and so far everything is going well.

I was not going into this thinking that I would not become friends with anyone in my group. It is just that it is hard to leave everyone that you know and every routine you have for college. It is basically like we had to start all over again, like it was freshman year. We were coming to a new place and were going to meet new people from all over the world. But like I said, that is hard when everything you know and are used to is back home.

But a month in and I think everything is going well! I hope my fellow classmates that are over here with me can agree. We have already planned a lot of trips with each other and I think that it is nice to have each other around. We are just something that is familiar and it is nice to be able to go to the group. In the end, we will all be returning to America together and we will continue to go to school together for two and a half more years.

I am not going to lie, I would like to make a few more friends from around the world but it is difficult and I am starting to let that idea go. It is hard to keep in touch with friends in different parts of the world. I already have a few and so I know that it can be a challenge. But at the end of this journey, I am going to be going back with 12 new friends that I will be able to see all the time. I have made some other friends that are from different parts of the United States so that is cool. But in the end, I will mostly be with the 12 I came over here with.

I look forward to our future at Western New England together as well as returning to my friends that are currently there. I am thoroughly enjoying my time here with my new friends, but it will be great to see everyone back at home!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
