Make a list and check it twice.

Make The Most Of Your Last Summer At Home

The minutes are counting down to the school year, and you know by now that once summer kicks into high gear everything is going to fly by. If you're anything like me, you get that tension between your shoulders and tightness in your chest that lets you know the clock is ticking.

Time to go do something, okay?

Over the past few years I've found that I like to have a theme to my summer. One year's was "Let's get Megan Ready for College" another was "Let's Paint Canvases to Decorate My Dorm Rooms So It Looks Like I Put a Little Effort into My Life." They don't have to be super intensive themes (example: a painting themed summer), but they help me look back on the important parts of a summer that would otherwise mesh together and be forgotten.

You don't have to have a theme per say, but a major goal is always a motivating factor. You could decide that you want to take up knitting, or decide this is the summer you're finally going to get fit (HA).

Or you could take my path and brainstorm ideas for a fun final farewell to the city you grew up in.

First thing's first: make a list.

Settle down with the homies at your restaurant of your choice and brainstorm things that you've always wanted to do, but were too lazy to get your lives together to actually go do. Things might start out slow at first, but once ideas start coming, those picturesque activities that are all over your Instagram feed will definitely end up on your list. This will take a long time after you eventually get going, and the most random things will appear on this list – just roll with it.

Second thing's second: Actually go do the thing, ok?

The theme of this summer isn't "We Made a List and then Didn't Follow Through." Every time you get a text that says, "Hey wanna get dinner tonight?" Whip out that list and throw some things back to your friends as after dinner ideas. Not only will you look like your life is put together, but in a group of indecisive people, your suggestion will be a godsend.

Don't let this summer melt into all the other ones. Have it stand out as something to remember. Make it your purpose to accomplish something big this summer by making a list and actually doing it!

Here are some of the things on my list if you need some inspiration:

  • Outlet mall shopping
  • Running bases at the old Rosenblatt stadium
  • Railyard (for the Instagram opportunities)
  • Car safari
  • Cooking class

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
