This past election week has been crazy to say the least. President-Elect Donald Trump took a surprising lead in the polls Tuesday and many voters young and old have expressed their displeasure with the results. But no matter your opinion on the next President of the United States some really great things happened for women on Tuesday. One thing in particular is Zena Stephens, the first black female to be elected as a sheriff in Texas.
Stephens is one of many women who where elected into office this past Tuesday. Not only are those elected women but they are also apart of minority groups in America. This is monumental for young American boys and girls because they get to grow up in a place were there truly is opportunity for everyone.
Jefferson County elected Stephens to succeed Mitch Woods on November 8, 2016. Stephens was a democratic candidate running against the republican candidate, Ray Beck. She won by 2,431 votes which was 51.4% of the vote. Stephens is currently serving as police chief of Prairie View A&M University and she is the former chief deputy for the county.
