In Hollywood, we have gotten to see numerous shows that have given minorities a platform to shine. One primary platform that has allowed for actors to show their talent has been on television. These actors have brought strong waves that would leave a mark on the small screen and bring expertise that would allow us to keep going back to the show.
Some of the shows that we get to see include:
1. How to Get Away with Murder
With Viola Davis as the lead actress, we got to see some fantastic acting the kept me coming back. With the latest season, I now begin to idolize her and idolize the character she plays. She shows that she truly is human by revealing her sadness, and then went on to dominate her case in the Supreme Court. When it comes to inner strength, Viola Davis’ character might as well be what every little girl may want to grow up to become.
2. Jane the Virgin
This show begins with accidental insemination for a virgin girl. With a Latina girl playing the lead we see a new light shed on the Latina culture. One that sheds light on a girl who values her family and beliefs. Jane the Virgins storyline allows for young girls of color to have someone to genuinely look up to. They may also share similar opinions and see someone like themselves represented on television.
3. The Real
This talk show with anchors, Adrienne Bailon, Tamara Mowry- Housley, Loni Love and Jeannie Mai bring about a different table to the daytime talk show. The ladies use their platforms to talk about issues that impact our day to day lives and talk about more significant issues that affect our communities. This talk show is an hour which has women of color on their table allows for people to see new faces on the screen.
4. Empire
This show has a strong African American Cast which allows many individuals to see people at the top of the music industry who are facing struggles in their day to day life. From prison to taking control of their company this show brings about strong personalities that to the screen.
5. Quantico
This show brings about Priyanka Chopra who is an Indian actress. It shows us how an immigrant can take the screen by storm. Not only that this show brings about a girl in a Hijab. These scenes, especially in the modern day political climate in the United States, give many hopes to achieve the success despite their external experience.
6. Being Mary Jane
This show is based on an African American woman who holds a job as a news anchor. This fiction-based show is something that one can identify with, and see how this woman indeed holds her head up high despite everything going on in the characters life.
7. Luke Cage
A marvel interpretation of a man who is given super strength in an experiment begins his newly found life which allows him to play a strong character on screen. The character played by an African American man can be now set as a new role model for young children. The main cast includes a wide variety of people of color. Luke sets an example which can allow him to be portrayed as a role model.
8. Orange is the New Black
This show based on a women’s prison brings to light the problems of the within the system. It also brings to light issues of the LGBTQ+ community by giving the screen to actresses like Laverne Cox. This show which has numerous cast members of color gives the small screen the opportunity to shed light on the issues within our society.
Though these are some of the shows that have a substantial minority cast in them. Other shows can be pointed out that are the talks of countless fans. The change in the way the dynamics of the television. It is giving people space and opportunity to show their talents and opening the doors for minorities in the United States that would allow them to overcome their daily struggles.
