It's super popular to scroll through social media right now and see different kinds of challenges, and often it results in a big eye roll from me. I was scrolling through Pinterest and procrastinating (as you do), and saw different articles from bloggers who tested their boyfriend's knowledge on some common makeup products.
Generally, I am not into this kind of thing, but having an engineer rooted in logic and assurance he is always right makes for some pretty interesting answers. So I set him up rather unknowingly and asked if I could test his knowledge, starting with some of the basic makeup products and telling me what they are. I'm not a big makeup wearer, so I wasn't expecting much beyond eyeshadow and lipstick. Especially taking into consideration the remarks I've gotten when I've had to do my makeup with him in the room - namely with the eyelash curler.
At first, he wasn't really having it. But the more questions I asked...the better the answers got. I would like to preface that when I mentioned this experiment he replied with, "What kind of experiment? Like with organs? ".
Yes, dearest.
Without further ado...
Mascara
Eyelashes makeup. Used to add thicc-er thicc to your eyelashes and make them look better with more volume.
Okay....he's not wrong, I guess. Mascara is commonly used to enhance the eyelashes by darkening, thickening, adding length, or definition.
Foundation
Face skin tone makeup. The base layer to the back up added canvas, if you will, to broken, uneven faces.
Foundation is a skin-colored makeup applied to the face to create an even color to the complexion, to cover flaws and, sometimes, to change the natural skin tone.
Concealer
I've heard of it, I dunno what it is. Hides blemishes? I'm playing Siege.
A concealer is a type of cosmetic that is used to mask dark circles, age spots, large pores, and other small blemishes visible on the skin. It can also be used for color correcting and hides different pigmentation.
Highlighter
Lighter foundation to accent features. I guess there's multiple highlighters tho...like hair stuff, eye stuff, skin stuff, tanning stuff for your arms...
In his defense, I wasn't very specific, but I think he definitely gets points for thoroughness. However, in this case, highlighter is a cosmetic that can make your skin look more natural, or more glowing, and is used to emphasize features such as the eyes or cheekbones.
Eyeshadow
Makes eyelids darker?
Eyeshadow is a cosmetic that is applied on the eyelids and is commonly used to make the eyes stand out. Eyeshadow can add depth and dimension, compliment the eye color, or make eyes appear larger.
Lipstick
Duh.
I mean...duh.
Blush
Rosy cheeks.
To the point - but correct. Blush is typically used to redden the cheeks and to emphasize the cheekbones, usually to give someone a more youthful look. (10/10).
Bronzer
Makes your face look evenly tan when you have raccoon eyes from sunglasses.
Specific - kind of sounds like there's some experience here...and surprisingly not far off.
Bronzer is used to emulate a sun-kissed glow and enhance a tan.
One of the best things about this is that everyone's boyfriend is different so it makes for all kinds of fun once they stop the groaning. He surprisingly didn't do half bad, considering I only use a quarter of these products. But on a serious note, he gets some credit.
I appreciate the knowledge he has because I know personally, I'm always quick to assume they have no idea what's going on. And let's be honest...sometimes that is correct. But, they try. There is a sort of magic to the simplicity and I think one that can be very useful. Dare I go as far as to say this can be a metaphor for how you can simply love yourself without all of the complicated, altering products? Maybe.
Or maybe it's just for laughs. At this rate, he's on his way to being the next Kim Kardashian.
