Why Is Makeup So Complicated?

In a world of smoky eyes and winged eyeliner, I barely understand mascara.

Why Is Makeup So Complicated?
Mia Pisano

When I was in middle school, I put on chap stick with the occasional lip gloss and thought I was a star. In high school, I would wear mascara here or there, but not every day, and it was no big deal. Now, I’m in college, and I have no idea what to do with make-up while I see 12-year-old girls who actually look 25 due to the face of make-up they’ve applied.

It’s not that I have anything against make-up, I just don’t understand it at all. There’s primer, foundation, concealer, highlighter, bronzer, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, fake lashes, lip stick, lip gloss, special brushes to use for everything, a pencil to fill in your eyebrows, a little tool to curl your lashes, and hundreds of other things, but none of it makes sense to me. How do you know where to put everything, and how much of it do you use? There is just so much stuff to use and so little face space for it, I have no clue how to do it. I’ve looked up tutorials on Pinterest and YouTube. I’ve seen my sister put on make-up so many times, and almost all the girls I follow on social media always have flawless make-up, but not me. It is all way too complex for me and seems like way too much effort.

I only have two small eye shadow sets that specifically say which of the three colors goes on the lid, the crease, and the brow bone, along with a tube of mascara, and a few lip glosses that match practically everything, and even that can be way too much for me some days. I usually don't wear it everyday, mostly only for special occasions, and it takes about 10 minutes for me to complete my look. I have never spent more than $15 on any specific piece of make-up. I don’t have seven different eye shadow palettes that all practically look the same. I don’t have 20 brushes that are only allowed to be used in one product (and if I use the same brush in everything I will not have a meltdown). I do not own a single pen for eye liner or eyebrows, and I have no make-up that could be used for contouring because I don’t even know what that means. It’s just all too complicated for me, so it really is not worth my time or hassle or money to learn.

Now, I do understand that some people totally enjoy doing their make-up. They clearly know what they’re doing, and I give them huge props. If you love going out to buy those brand new sets and cannot wait to get home to try them out, then you go girl, do your thing. Some girls love make-up and look gorgeous with it. I absolutely have no idea what I’m doing when I pick up a brush, but that’s absolutely okay. However, I still don’t know why make-up must be so confusing. If only it could be as easy as the snap of my fingers. Maybe someday I'll get it, but most likely, I won't.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
