What Makes Home, Home

A list of things for college students to appreciate about being home for vacation.

For college students, home is the finest vacation spot where the daily routine doesn't exist. It's a place of comfort, and where we would all rather be instead of our limited dorm rooms. In the spirit of Columbus Day weekend and going home, here are a few reminders of what to look forward to.

1. The water

I don't know what it is exactly, but the taste of the filtered water from my fridge is really one of a kind. Nothing excites me more than grabbing an ice-cold water in my favorite scratched up cup and sitting down on the comfiest couch in my living room :)

2. Your Car

Since I do not have my car up at school, I am so excited to go home and drive for a little while. After not having a car for a few months, I realize that driving around is one of my favorite things to do regardless the terrible drivers on Long Island.

3. Your family

Being very family oriented makes it hard to be away from them for so long, but only makes a short time that we have together even better. My family is who I am closest with, so when I'm home I am in the complete comfort of my surroundings, and nothing is better than being comfy.

4. Your bedroom

Dorm rooms are cool. Bedrooms are cooler. I like having a friend around all the time, but I also miss my privacy a ton. I also miss the colors of my walls, because I've had enough of white walls.

5. The couch

That couch that is the comfiest couch in the whole world right in front of your TV. The couch that your family fights to be on. Yeah, that couch. I love that couch.

6. Smell of cooking

Since there are no ovens in dorm halls, the smell of food doesn't exist. Unless you go to the dining hall and get that sweet smell of french fries. As pleasing as the smell of french fries can be, it tends to become a bit much.

7. The noise

I grew up with two other younger siblings who are always in and out the door to get to practice for one of their many sports, so I miss the sound of my front door slamming shut when someone is in a rush to go somewhere. I also miss the creeks on my staircase when I go upstairs. And I even the obnoxious sound of my hamster running on his wheel at night. We all have these homey sounds that make home the great place that it is.

8. Wearing gray on gray, and not feeling judged

Ah yes, I definitely miss walking around the house in the ugliest and comfiest clothes. Not having to change to get food is such a privilege.

9. The routine

Since I'm home just for the vacation, I'll be pretty out of my routine. But I get to see my family's daily routine and appreciate that I don't have one (for the time being).

10. Your pet

I have a little hamster that I am looking forward to seeing, but unfortunately he never really knows when I'm gone or not so I don't get any love back :(

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
