Make Your Summer Count

Don't waste it away on your couch.

Summer. Summer. Summer. Summer. Yes, it's, finally here! It's what we've all been waiting for, a little vacation from our four-year vacation at the U of A. Now I don't know about you, but unfortunately for me, a good part of my summer is usually wasted away on my couch watching Netflix. Now, don't get me wrong Netflix is awesome, but it can get so boring after a while. This summer will not be another chance for my butt to make a substantial imprint on my couch. This summer will count for something.

Get a job.

okay for some of you this may sound like the worst thing in the world, but honestly, a job can be pretty awesome. Wel,l first of all, money and second of all it gives you something to do and makes you feel productive and happy. A job could stem from working at the mall to doing an amazing internship in the field your studying. If you land the latter, then I don't know how you couldn't be excited, for the summer.

Leave your house.

At least once a day. Spending eternity on your couch may sound like a good time, but come on, that gross feeling you get when you don't do anything for an entire day is far from worth it. Do anything. Go to your friend's house, go take your pet to the groomers, even just go to the grocery store. Anything. Give yourself a reason to always put on real pants every day.

Hang out with your friends.

College isn't going to be forever, and with graduation comes a huge chance all of your friends are going to go their separate ways. All of your friends from home may have already gone their separate way so absolutely do not waste time with them. Hit up a friend you haven't talked to all year, or go to a friends house you talk to every day either way. This could be one of your last summers to make exciting memories with them, so make it count.

Learn how to do something new.

There is something so satisfying about coming back from a summer, with some sort of new hidden talent that people are surprised to hear about. Spend your days learning how to play an instrument, apply to be a spokesperson for something, do something crazy and exciting. Go skydiving or bungee jumping, be completely out of the ordinary. Even something as simple as dying your hair, or figuring out how to make your eyebrows look perfect, let this summer be a time of metamorphosis. No matter how tiny the transformation is, it'll count for something.

Go to the gym.

This might be a little cliche, but going to the gym as much as you can over the summer is so important. Long are the excuses about being too busy with school or clubs to go to the gym. Now, nothing is getting in the way between you and all of those endorphins. Plus getting to the gym as many times you can over the summer will more than likely give you motivation to complete at least one if not all of the other items on this list.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
