How to Make Your Spring Semester a Great One

Did fall semester get you down? Do you feel like you've fallen into a hole and you can't get up? Do you think about dropping out more than the average college student? Well stop what you're doing and listen, I am here to help. I know in the past I have given a lot of advice on many different topics, including what artists to watch in the upcoming year, and what to do in Indianapolis, also how to make extra cash in college, but I swear this will really help if you just follow these important steps. I'm about to give you the low down on how to make this spring semester better than the last.

Step 1: Wake up at least an hour before you leave for class everyday.

Last semester I bet you woke up 30-45 minutes before you were supposed to leave so you could get the most sleep possible. I know this because that is exactly what I did! I'll be the first to admit that it was worse than waking up early; getting up late and rushing out the door is more stressful than thinking about how early you have to wake up. By setting that alarm earlier, you have more time to either lay in bed and browse Twitter, or take your time to get ready in the morning. It doesn't matter what you do with that time, as long as you are awake to mentally prepare yourself for class.

Step 2: Nourish your body the right way.

I know it can get difficult to eat healthy in college, but believe me when I say that if there is a will, there is a way. Skip the pizza and soda, save that for a special occasion such as getting a good grade. Your body is a machine and it needs the necessary nutrients to make it run smoothly and efficiently. Get one of those fancy water bottles and never stop refiling it! Stop eating unnecessary sugars too, I know your late night runs to the convince store are fun, but your body has to put in overtime to break it down when it should be resting. Eat those veggies and drink all the water!!

Step 3: Get adequate sleep.

This is a no brainer; you need sleep.

Step 4: Get help when you need it.

This can be applied to both school and personal life; if you feel like you're drowning in school work then make an appointment to see your professor to address concerns you might have. Chances are that your classmates could feel the same way, and the professor can take it with you step by step on what needs to be done. Don't understand a lesson? Go to office hours or a campus tutor. If you feel yourself drowning with personal issues then make your way over to your school's counselor or advisor. You are not the first and you definitely won't be the last to feel overwhelmed. There is no shame in asking for advice or having an unbiased person to talk to.

Step 5: Do all the readings.

This one is from the good old mind of my father; one of the few pieces of advice that I actually took. Nothing is worse than going into a class discussion and not knowing what they are talking about or how to contribute. Do the readings, skim them if you can, just find a way to do it.

Step 6: Go to every class.

Yet another piece of advice that my father gave me; this should also be a no brainer but it is easier said than done. Of course there are times when you really do have the flu, in which case please stay home, but if you are able to walk with ease then you should go to class. You won't get behind on anything and you get those attendance points.

Step 7: Exercise.

I saved the best for last; I get it, you have other stuff to do, you live far away, it's too cold to go outside, and you're knee kinda hurts, right? I'm not saying you have to go to the gym for two hours at at time or sign up for a boot camp. Just a 30 minute walk a day can not only have weight loss benefits but it gives you time to clear your head and give you some peace after a grueling day of classes/ people.

Following these simple steps can get you on the right track to a wonderful new semester. So please, TAKE THIS ADVICE!!!

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
