Don't Forget It's OK To Take Time For Yourself

We're usually the person we forget about most, and that's a problem...

Always make time for you - that's something that sounds so simple yet it's usually the one thing we forget to do with our time. We make time for work, for friends, for family, for entertainment, for obligations, for people who aren't always worth our time, but we tend to usually put ourselves last. And that's a problem.

Making time for yourself should be a number one priority in your everyday life. To carve out even five to ten minutes a day is extremely hard to do, even though it sounds like one of the easiest things to do. And it's crazy because people will say that they are taking time for themselves while scrolling through Facebook or Instagram or whatever social media platform they're on - but think about it, that is time you're investing in other people. That's time that you're putting into seeing and internalizing what other people are doing with their lives. And ultimately, you're spending your time comparing your life to theirs. You're sitting on your couch, telling yourself that you're taking five minutes to relax, but really, you're investing your time in-validating others.

Watch your favorite show - without your cellphone in your hand - or read a book. Listen to some music, stretch, work out. Drink a cup of tea in complete silence. Do something for you that involves no one else. It can be the absolute hardest thing to do when you really think about it, but it's the thing that will give you peace and set your mind right.

And even harder - don't let anyone take away the time you want to give to yourself. Say no to plans. Say no to answering work emails at home. Say no to whatever it is that will interfere from investing in yourself. Even those five minutes where you think that it couldn't possibly turn your day around or make you feel any better will really help when you make a habit of taking care of yourself and giving you the time that you usually would give to others. It's not selfish to make sure you're happy and clear-headed. It'll positively impact yourself and ultimately everything around you.

Don't forget about you and always make time for you. It sounds so incredibly silly. It sounds so much like a sentence that deserves a duhhhh answer to it. But I promise you, it'll help so much. It'll give you peace mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. It'll help you wrap your head around all of the other things in your life that are taking up so much time and space and you don't even realize are impacting your day to day. It'll clear out any feeling that you can't even catch your breath. In those moments, make sure to notice yourself catching that breath. Make sure to notice that you may have said no to answering an email but you'll realize that nine times out of ten, answering that email can wait - you are more important.

Always remember that you are just as important as everything else going on around you and you deserve five minutes to focus on yourself. Always take time for you. Always make time for you.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
