Making Time for God

Why is it so hard to make time for God in our daily lives?

College can be a tough time for a lot of people. At some point during these four years, we are bound to face a few obstacles. We're trying to figure out life on top of dealing with stress, growing up, and managing all the things that go along with surviving school. A lot of times, people lose sight of where they came from and struggle finding a way to get back where they need to be.

So often, we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of college, that we lose sight of where we are putting our time, thoughts, and energy. We can easily lose sight of God and start to drift without even realizing it. We begin to make other things our so called, “idols.”

This weekend, I began to notice it in myself and realized just how easy it is to create our own earthly gods without even noticing it.

We often times put our time that is meant for furthering our faith with Christ, in other things that may actually pull us away from Him.

We begin to place our happiness in temporary love, current boyfriends, sorority sisters, even parties. We begin to focus more on making the grades rather than focus our eyes on God. And please don’t get me wrong…I am not saying your relationships and grades are not important, because believe me THEY ARE! You are here going to a University where you are reaching goals and receiving an education, striving to be successful. That is very important! And we need people to go through life with and have relationships that are bettering us, as well. But my point is we shouldn’t be so caught up with earthly desires that we begin to take our eyes off of God. We shouldn’t be idolizing our grades, or turning our friends and boyfriends into temporary gods, spending more time with them rather than with God.

In college it is so easy to drift away from God without really seeing it as it is happening. We so easily can get caught up in trying to survive college, that we are chasing after everything but God and expecting our life to get easier. But it won’t.

Without spending time with God, wanting to further our faith, we are getting nowhere.

You can spend all the time with your friends, going to countless parties, but if you are expecting that to be what gets you through college, then you will have a rough four years. College is meant to be fun, but also is a perfect time to own your faith in Christ and discover more about Him, daily.

If you spend all your time, effort, and energy on your earthly relationships, you are leaving no time for God in your life and bettering your relationship with Him. And instead letting your significant other or friendships, take over God in your life. He loves you deeply, but we often times get caught up loving everything else that we fall short of loving God with our whole hearts.

We need to instead become more aware. Take time to reflect on our own life, and where we are putting our time and energy. Are we making the time for God? Or are we too busy for Him day in and day out?

Making time for God in college is so key though because we are nothing without Him. Yet, we are so caught us with everything else around us that we start to drift our attention away from Him. And this is something I struggle with daily, and know that in college it can so easily happen.

We are human and will fall short. But that shouldn’t just be an excuse. It should be what opens our eyes. God is always going to be there, waiting for us with open arms. Even when we fail Him and fall short.

It is a struggle sometimes to find time for just you and God, and in the craziness of life it doesn’t always happen. But it should be our goal to make time for Him. We should want to spend time with Him as much as we want to spend time with our friends.

And it may sound extreme, but just think about it. We all have a busy life and crazy schedule day in and day out, and if all we care about are our earthly desires, then that is what we will make time for. That is what will become our gods. And it may sound dumb but it is true. If you are so busy and spend all your time on school, work, and your earthly desires, then where does God fit into all of this?

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
