Syllabus week is upon us and it’s time to get back into the routine of classes. Warm weather is on the way and you’re ready to soak up that sunshine, but before you get ahead of yourself, make sure you have a routine for the upcoming semester. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Organize

Organization is key to staying on track each semester. At the beginning of each week, write tasks (HW assignments, chores, job applications) that you need to complete on sticky notes and stick them onto a wall that you look at every day. Once you complete the task, you get to rip it off. Aim to have a clean wall by the weekend.

Don’t fall behind

Make a promise to plan ahead for big projects and papers so that you aren’t waiting till the last minute. Whatever you do, don’t procrastinate! Read the syllabus in advance and write due dates in your planner or set reminders in your phone so that you keep up with your work. This will keep you from having to pull any all-nighters this semester, which can affect your circadian rhythm, your metabolism and your long-term memory among other things.

Make a list

College years are some of the best years of our lives and we deserve to experience as much as we can during these short four years. Maybe you go to school in a different state from home and want to explore your surroundings since you may never be back (except for homecomings of course). Make a list of places you want to see, restaurants you want to taste, or even study abroad opportunities. Make plans to explore sooner rather than later before graduation sneak up and it’s too late.

Join a new club

Just because the organization fair was in the fall doesn’t mean you can’t join a new club halfway through the year. It doesn’t hurt to try something new, so put yourself out there and find new connections with people. Open doors to new networking opportunities and resume builders while you’re at it.

Plan ahead

Every night before you go to sleep, plan out the day ahead. If you want to make a commitment to getting healthier, find a time in your schedule to go to the gym (maybe right after class) and stick to that. If you have a big test coming up, set time ahead to study at the library. The same goes for eating, if you’re going to be out all day in classes and meetings and the library, plan to bring healthy snacks so you don’t starve yourself and end up devouring an order of nuggets and fries from Chick-fil-A.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
