Now that the election is over, let's talk about making something else great again: Grey's Anatomy. If you don't watch Grey's Anatomy, you should probably put down whatever you're doing, stop reading this article, and start binging on Netflix. If you think medical shows aren't "your thing," have no fear! There are plenty of aspects of the show that will spark your interest, even if you squirm at the mere sight of blood (which, I won't lie, there is a ton of).
As Grey's reaches the midseason finale of season 13, it's very easy to say that this season lacks the same 'spark' that it had in its earlier seasons. Even as someone who binge-watched the show very quickly (very, very quickly), it is so apparent that the show does not have the same effect on me as it did when I was watching seasons 1-12. You could argue that it's because I didn't watch the other seasons live or you could argue that it's because my favorite character left the show (miss you, Calliope). But even despite these things, something about the show just doesn't appeal to me the way it used to.
I think a big reason for this change of heart is because none of the characters in the show right now are very happy. Meredith is sad because everyone she loves is dead and she can't be with the guy she's interested in because her sister likes him, Maggie is sad because Riggs doesn't have feelings for her, Riggs is sad because he can't be with Meredith, Alex's career and relationship is on the line, Jo's identity is episodes away from being revealed, everyone pretty much hates DeLuca for pressing charges on Alex, Bailey has to fire someone, Richard low-key still wants to be chief, Arizona lost her wife and daughter (sorta), Amelia and Owen are probably gonna get divorced by the end of the season because every couple on Grey's gets divorced, Jackson and April are too stubborn to admit they still love each other, I mean literally not a single person on Grey's Anatomy is happy, so how can it's audience be happy? Why would I get enjoyment out of watching the characters I love, suffer?
So how can we fix this? Well, it isn't easy. We can't bring others back from the dead and everyone that has left can't magically come back (mostly because of the actors, but also because of some current storylines).
We could have another monumental, political crisis that makes everyone realize they love and support each other through thick and thin (remember after the shooting when Arizona and Callie forgot about the whole kid's debacle and confessed they still love each other? Something like that). We could deal with another unspoken issue that people can relate to, like Callie becoming comfortable with her sexuality or Meredith dealing with depression. We could have one, happy couple that gives us hope- I mean seriously, how am I supposed to believe in love if I have watched it fail at least once in every season? Also, if you recall back in earlier seasons, there was a nice balance between the medicine and personal life. Now it's all about relationships. What happened to the medical show that we all fell in love with?
No matter what happens during this midseason finale or any other episode, I'm going to keep watching. I know several people who have stopped watching because their favorite character left or died, or just stopped watching because it seemed as though the show continued to drag on. However, this is a show that entertained me, that educated me, that made me a better actor, made me a better person, made me comfortable with being myself, and most of all this is a show I fell in love with. It's still that show- no matter who dies or who leaves or how happy the characters are. We don't quite know how much longer the show will go on, and even if it ends in the finale of season 13, nobody knows where these characters might end up!!
