Ways to Take Care of Yourself in 2017

We’re still in the beginning of the new year, but the next few months will likely shape our perception of 2017. After the sh*tstorm that was 2016, it’s important to take care of and prioritize yourself, even if it’s just on a small scale. 2017 brings new opportunities for us to encourage good mental and physical health in ourselves!

1. Don't be afraid to say "no."

Don’t let other people control you. If there’s something you absolutely don’t want to do, it’s okay to say no. Whether it’s a party you don’t want to attend or a study session that you can’t handle right now, it’s important to recognize when you need to take some time alone or a couple of hours to relax.

2. However, be open to saying "yes".

It’s important to also put yourself out there. Take opportunities when they present themselves. Take risks. Go places with people you appreciate.

3. Support your people.

This is something I’ve been working on since 2016 – I make sure to encourage and compliment others, whether it be friends, acquaintances, family, whoever. I make sure to tell them when they look fantastic, or when they do something I admire. This attitude breeds positivity, which is bound to come back your way.

4. W A T E R!

You will see this everywhere. Bad skin? Water! Tired? Water! Headache? Water! Hydration is extremely important, and drinking enough water just makes everything better. It, of course, isn’t a miracle fix, but being properly hydrated helps everything function better.

5. Don’t judge yourself too harshly.

It’s okay to mess up. It’s okay to skip the gym a few times when you’re just not feeling it. It’s okay to not ace every exam. Don’t let one bad moment, day, or week, overwhelm you. Forgetting to do an assignment, while not a good thing, is not going to be the end of the world.

6. Surround yourself with people who love and appreciate you.

Don’t keep people around who make you question your worth. You don’t need that kind of negative influence in your life. 2017 should be the year of realizing how great you are, and people who don’t reinforce this have no place around you. Don’t let others bring you down.

7. Treat yourself.

In the words of Donna Meagle and Tom Haverford, treat yo’ self. It’s okay to eat candy once in a while, to buy brand-name candy instead of the Walmart brand, to spend a few extra bucks on something you want, but might not necessarily need.

8. And (possibly worst of all), take care of your physical health.

I know, I know. Another tip you’ve heard over and over. And I know how much exercising sucks, but it basically helps every aspect of your being. Even just taking the stairs on occasion is a step in the right direction, or taking the long way instead of a shortcut. Start gradually and find something that you enjoy – personally, I’ve become very fond of the rowing machine, as it’s basically the most fun I’ve ever had.

The bottom line is this: it’s okay to put yourself first. Be selfish – sometimes that’s the best thing you can do for yourself.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.
