Brave are the young men and women who sign up for the military to try and create a better future for themselves, and for our country, and brave are the ones who wait for them.
Brave are the parents who go to work every single day to earn a wage to put food on the table, and brave are those who work to serve others on a daily basis.
Brave are those who stand up for loving who they want, and being who they want despite what others tell them to.
Brave is believing in miracles, even when one doesn't think they are possible anymore.
The older I get, the rarer these people are: the ones who believe in miracles. As though at some point along the way, God stopped working in our lives — in our country — and all good things went extinct. That is how social media portrays it. That is how all the wide-spread hate in our nation portrays it. That is how we portray it when we decide that complaining is suddenly a better way to change things than actual action and initiative.
I am not blind to all the tragedy that has struck over the last few years, and I am not suggesting we overlook it. With Lafayette — our home — experiencing its very own tragedy so close to where we live, it is definitely not something to be taken lightly. All of the victims of all of these events deserve to be remembered and honored.
We have to remember these times in order to change. This is why we are taught history in school, this is how we gain the power to make changes. This is why we vote on things and pay such close attention to our government, so we can correct things in the best way possible in the best way we know how to.
We don't remember these things to become weak. We don't remember these things to become depressed about who we are and where we live. I am so sick and tired of hearing how much everyone hates America, and how they will physically move to another country if the person they vote for isn't elected.
Newsflash: a new president isn't going to heal this country! Love, healing, perseverance and God's grace will.
I am proud to be an American because we are a country built on the right to make a future for ourselves, despite our background; we are a country that is always growing and changing and striving to be the best we can be. Are we perfect? No, but nothing worldly is perfect. When you compare us to many other places in this imperfect world, just getting to wake up knowing we are a democracy where we can constantly improve based on our opinions and passions is a blessing, and something most other nations are deprived of.
Stop arguing on Facebook over opinions on politics.
Stop believing this world is a horrible place.
Be brave, choose love and choose to take part in making this country a better place for all of the future generations to come.
