The night/morning the election results were finalized, I wrote the following:
"Trump’s campaign was literally an accurate representation of how I do homework.
I bullshit it and tell the professors what they want to hear.
The only difference is his campaign was the homework and the professors was the entire nation. Also, me BSing a paper isn’t going to set the country back…probably just my grades."
That's as far as I got.
Here’s the thing though, I went to bed after the election mourning the death of our country. I was feeling a lot more melodramatic than usual, and I feel I had good reason. You voted for him because you wanted change? Vote third party, that’d be a change of pace. A vote for Trump was a vote for misogyny, sexual assault, bullying, racism, and intolerance. I thought “America the beautiful” was better than that. I felt sick knowing people were able to vote for him after he made the remarks that he did. Whether or not he meant them or just said them to get people to vote for him is beyond me. What sickened me is knowing so many people were fine with the things he was saying. I went to bed feeling sorry for myself because “I’m a woman born into a family that would optimistically be considered not-so-wealthy, so obviously, my life is going to be hell. I'm a woman in general, so this is gonna suck whether I have money or not.” I went to bed with a knot in my stomach anticipating the crap that this country is about to put me through. I went to bed thinking about myself. Trump’s presidency is bigger than just me, though. His presidency demands that a whole lot of us need to start living according to a higher standard.
I will not let Trump change me for the worse. I will continue to stand for equality for all. I will continue to fight the patriarchy. I will not respect some reality TV star just because he’s the president. I will not respect a man who blatantly makes racist remarks. I will not respect a man who does not give respect to everyone else. I will continue to fight. I will fight until my hands are bloody and I can’t get up. I will fight for those who cannot. I refuse to accept anything less than equality and the acknowledgement of racism, sexism, and every other -ism. I refuse to accept this hate into my world. So to anyone who stands with me, let's take on President Trump's challenge--let's make America great.
