Formal: The Affordable and Fashionable Way

17

I love formal. I love dressing up, doing my hair and going for a night with my friends. Formal is the one time I can acceptably wear an evening dress, which is quite the change-up from the typically leggings and activity shirt that I normally dawn. There’s just something about formal season that makes me happy. However, what I don’t love about formal is the price tag. There are some costs that are unavoidable, like tickets and shirts. But for the rest of the evening, there are a few ways to save money. A friend of mine told me about a website in which you could pay a mere fraction of the cost for designer clothing, such as dresses. To me, this sounded like a miracle. So I checked out Rent the Runway (www.renttherunway.com) and about kicked myself for not discovering this sooner.

This site contains designer dresses and accessories that suit any occasion. They literally have a tab for, “college spring formals.” I mean, really! All of the dresses I’ve bought for previous formals that just sit in my closet and take up space could have been easily eliminated by just renting my dress. If you prefer not to find your shoes on Rent the Runway, there are other affordable options.

I see these commercials all the time, “buy one pair, get the next free!” Yes, those annoying Shoe Fab and Shoe Dazzle commercials that plague our televisions. But, if you actually bother to visit these sites, you’ll find that they’re giving you a great deal. They have several styles of shoes, for any occasion, and they are all offered for $39.95 and under. Often times they’ll even offer a deal of extra savings for customers who make an account. So why not see about finding your formal shoes, too?

My last favorites for formals is actually two, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. Owned by the same company, these stores sell brand new, name brand clothing at a lesser cost than its original retail price. Depending on what you’re shopping for, this can be a great option. I highly recommend searching for shoes here, a cute clutch to carry, or even (because I have seen it a few times) your dress may be waiting in these stores. If you’re hoping for designer, there’s a good chance at scoring that here. Just the other day I found several Kate Spade purses, clothing, etc. So it’s worth a shot!

Reality is, formal is expensive. But it doesn’t have to come with a price tag to bring down the night. After already spending enough on spring break trips and other miscellaneous things, formal can feel like a burden. With these inexpensive options, you can surely find the best dress, shoes, and accessories to make your night perfect.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
