If you weren’t aware of what happened this past Wednesday, it’s okay, you can apologize after reading this article.
Three major leaders attended the North American Leaders’ Summit in Ottawa; they were: President of the United States, Barack Obama, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.
The three leaders, or as people like to call them, “the three amigos,” met to sign a “comprehensive North American climate, clean energy and environment partnership and committed themselves to better protect the LGBT community,” according to thestar.com.
Let’s all agree, that these three men are pretty cool. Here they are doing an awkward three-person handshake.
Some of the topics the three men discussed were:
- Climate change
- North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
- Border issues
- Economic issues
- Human rights
- Security issues
However, another one of the small discussions and questions the three men talked and answered were about the presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump, who has not set back to judge and accuse mexicans of wrongful actions and recently his opposal to NAFTA. President Obama made it clear that no matter who won the election, the deals would remain.
According to CNN, Obama said “expressing confidence that immigration wouldn't be shut off and trade deals would persist, Obama argued against the type of protectionist policies that Trump has espoused on the campaign trail.”
President Enrique Pena Nieto said that ‘political actors, by using populism and demagoguery, they choose the easier way to solve the challenges of today's world,’ he said through a translator, according to cnn.com.
However, Trudeau was more open and said "I look forward to working with whomever the American people elect as their president in November,” according to cnn.com.
It seems like the three leaders had a good time. Although, President Obama didn't stay for a day, President Enrique Pena Nieto did and seemed to have a good time with Prime Minister Trudeau. Here is a photo of both of them running side-by-side:
thestar.com reported, "It’s a time-honoured tradition for visiting dignitaries and Canadian leaders to hit the trails. After all, nothing says diplomacy like short shorts."
