Throughout high school I was certain that I wanted to be a veterinarian, so much that I knew where I wanted to work, where I wanted to intern at, and what vet schools to apply to. It wasn’t until after college applications were sent in that I started to doubt my decision.
Something in my mind flipped like a coin. At the time I was concerned, but not too much due to the hype of senior year. When I started at Humboldt State University I went in majoring in Zoology and left as an Environmental Science major. I transferred schools and found myself signing up for my third and final major switch, which was English.
I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do with it but I figured If I was going to spend 4 years and over $80,000 on an education I better do something that I would enjoy. Thankfully, Grand Canyon dedicates its time and money not just so it students can “Find their purpose” but can learn more about themselves and the world that they are going to step into after university.
Being true to their word, GCU offers a community that's unlike many due to the kindness of the students and the countless business opportunities that are offered throughout the year. If involved in clubs, there is a chance to network within different companies, though for the people that aren’t involved in things out of their own routine, I'm afraid they are out of luck.
As a club president, I have had the ability to not only add it on a resume but to meet and make lasting relationships with people I didn’t think I would. Club’s not only can create life long friends but can be useful in future business endeavors as well as help find your true passion. The future, especially when it regards yourself can be both daunting as well as exciting. Either we are going to live our lives the way we dream them to be, struggle to afford the basic necessities in life, or maybe both.
Without the guidance and support from my parents that I have gotten in the past 20 years I wouldn't be the successful and happy person that I am today.
Just because you might not be majoring in something that would make you “Big Bucks” in the future, still enjoy your time and the memories you make. Living life, no matter what stage you’re in to the fullest can only be beneficial to you. If you find yourself walking to your counselor with a new plan, don’t fret. Welcome change, and understand that life isn’t everything that we plan but instead what God has planned for us.
As a fellow lope, and someone who has changed her mind more times than she can count, I can say that school is full of ups and downs, finding your passion from friends and experiences will come naturally. Live a life greater than your current expectations.
