Trying to decide on a major? Here are some thoughts from Texas State students about what the best major is and why!

Physical therapy because it challenges me and strives me to do better than I think I can! It's the best major because it offers you so many opportunities after graduation!” —Victoria Thannoon, sophomore

Education because it makes me fall in love with it every time I step into a classroom. I continue to learn from the students everyday while at the same time they're learning from me. They leave knowing someone cares about them and it's so rewarding!” —Ashlee Bostick, senior

Special education. It's the most rewarding and amazing major out there. The joy you can bring these learners is something that can warm the soul. 'Light bulb moments' is what we live for. Although it's rewarding, it's the challenge that keeps me going. I've learned more about myself throughout my teacher prep programs than I ever have in my life. Every day is a different day and I can't image doing anything else. Countdown 'til I get my very own classroom has begun.” —Meredith Neely, senior

Dance major is the best major because I get to perfect my passion and craft while learning more about it. Sitting behind a desk taking notes can only teach you so much, and after awhile it get very boring. Majoring in dance lets me get up and move while I learn things about my body that I never could know sitting behind a desk.” -Madison Perrett, sophomore

Accounting because who doesn't like to understand why they're being taxed, amiright?”—Christine Wells, senior

Fashion merchandising. It is so cool to see how much fashion plays a role in our social and political events in all generations. Fashion has helped everyone portray who they are and what they stand for. It's amazing how fashion allows all groups and races to be united under one umbrella. I honestly love my major more than anything and couldn't think of doing anything else.” —Sarah Rule, sophomore

International Studies- My major 'requires' us to study abroad, and I will be going to South America for a semester. Taking International Studies classes gives me a lot of room for discussion and to express my opinions about things going on around the world, politically and culturally, without feeling judged or offending others.” —Shannon Long, senior

“I'm a social work major and I think it's the best major, at least for me, because it gives me the opportunity to work with underserved, underrepresented and oppressed populations of people. It allows me to give them the tools and resources to empower themselves and ultimately improve their well being. When I enter my profession I know that I'll go to work every day and be able to make a lasting impression and difference in someone else's life.” —Mariana Zamora, senior

Psychology. I love it because it is applicable in every single field because it deals with people and their behavior and why they act the way they do! There are so many branches from clinical, to counseling, to forensic and industrial which focuses on psychology in the workplace and business setting.” —Madeline Riddick, senior

Mass communication. Because communication is the basis of every business and every relationship. We are able to see interactions and have an influence on how our culture is informed and influenced. We are able to express ourselves and be proud of our creativeness, sass, and everything in between.” —Courtney Griffin, junior

Communication disorders. My major is for those dedicated to their studies and helping others. It's such hard work, long study hours and countless clinic hours. However, the hard work pays off as soon as you see the tears from an overjoyed individual who hears the sound of their mother, father, or significant others voice for the very first time. This major is all about helping those in need. It's about compassion, being a counselor when needed, and helping others experience the gift of sound. I love my career path. Audiologists are awesome!” —Ashlynn Parker, senior

Political Science! I love my major. You learn about government and international relations & my major teaches you to be a critical thinker, which is preparing me for law school! Also, I get to take fun classes like International Conflict and Security and play 'war games' during class.” —Beth Stewart, senior

Studio Art with a certification in education! I feel like it's very unique major and you get to express yourself in a million different ways. You also get to do something you enjoy doing and look forward to doing it, instead of dreading it. It also offers an escape and a way to relieve stress. Also with education you get to enrich the creative minds of kids and allow them so also have an escape from work and they can expand their creativity!” —Hannah Clark, freshman

“I'm a social work major and it literally rocks. We get to hangout in the community and get to know so much about what San Marcos has to offer people in need. Everyone you encounter is struggling in some way and you work with every single walk of life and help them. So, so rewarding!” —Alayna Mackey, Sophomore

Public Relations! PR consists of so many things but I love it because it allows you to be creative in your job and express yourself. The main goal is to get people to love what you are doing in your company just as much as you do (without paying for it) and personally that sounds like a blast! I love PR because you don't pay for the ad space but you convince the media to give you free space! I am a huge 'people-person' so any field where I am able to constantly help/work with people, I'm in!” —Samantha Perkins, junior

"Psychology is the best major because you get to study humans and how to interact with them, which I believe is the key to success. You can do lots of different things with a psychology major and you get to learn something new about yourself everyday!" —Taylor Goodman, freshman

Ultimately, all majors are great. Picking the right one for you is what's most important and I hope this article gave you a little more insight into a few of the wonderful majors Texas State has to offer!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
