At first glance, many of you are probably thinking “really? That’s lame” or something along those lines and for a while, I would have agreed with you. I used to hate school and some parts of it I still do hate (ok just my public speaking class) but once I found something I actually loved, going to class did not seem so bad anymore. I was always a believer in finding a job that I loved and that I wouldn’t dread going to for the consecutive years after graduating. For a while, I thought I was going to end up just working a desk job to make money because I couldn’t find my passion. I’m so happy to say I found my passion and school really isn’t that bad.
Now I know you don’t all have the same major as me and most of you love yours too which is great. This isn’t an article about my major only, it is about the feeling you get when you are sitting in class listening to a speaker or lecture that you are actually excited about. I can’t remember a time in high school or even my freshman year of college where I was sad when a lecture was over, but I have actually experienced it now. I can’t lie, I feel a little nerdy geeking out about school, but at the same time, it feels pretty good.
It seems our generation, more than others, is so set on the idea of truly loving our jobs. When I ask most adults about their current jobs most don’t like them and simply do them to support their family. Commendable, of course, but also sad. I think that is partially due to the rise of social media influencers and “YouTube famous” people that travel for a living for awesome companies.
That does sound amazing but it also gives motivation to young adults to work hard and find something that they will actually enjoy. It is so cheesy to say, but we really only have one life so we might as well do everything. My mom always said that to me: “why not do as much as you possibly can?” and now more than ever, I feel inclined to do it all. Or at least everything I can to make me happy.
So I know school sucks sometimes, but maybe you don’t like what you’re doing and that is why it is so unenjoyable. Sometimes we get in a rut and do things just because they are “right” or “going to make money” but money is not going to solve everything (even though it seems like it will). If you’re reading this and thinking I’m completely crazy, try rethinking your current situation and maybe you’ll see something just isn’t right. Trust me, loving your major and your future career path is much better than dreading every day of class. “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
