Why All College Majors Should Require An IT Course

It's about time that college graduates know to restart their computer instead of having IT guys tell them to first.

Introduction

In our growing society, we all can easily tell that technology, specifically computers, are growing at an alarming rate. Some would say that when you purchase a computer, it is already outdated by the time it leaves the store and in certain cases, that's not far from the truth. Just about every major household in the country has some sort of computer in their home, even if it is a smartphone. Desktop computers are everywhere, but the thing is, many people don't know how to use them. We might know how to boot it up and use the internet and type work, but we don't know much about the computer itself. Many of these people are college graduates.

My Message

With the growing rate of computers, we need more people who are able to at least handle the basics of Information Technology (the study of systems specifically computers.) I believe that anyone taking a college major must complete some form of Information Technology course in order to graduate. Now, in no way am I saying that all majors must be able to name all of the network protocols or god forbid, write a JavaScript HTML document, but there are two things that I believe all college graduates should be able to do, identify and replace certain parts of a computer and troubleshoot common problems that occur on computers. Here's why,

It Can Save Money

Anyone who has done it knows that taking a computer to a store for repairs or maintenance is expensive. If a computer's motherboard were to get fried, most people would not be able to diagnose or know how to replace it, in which case they would have to drive it all the way to their local Best-Buy or any store that has "IT guys" working there and spend sometimes hundreds of dollars to just get it fixed. That's not counting the price of actually buying a new motherboard because the store isn't paying for a replacement. If people were able to identify where that motherboard was and knew how to insert a new one, they wouldn't have to spend so much money to have somebody else replace it.

It Would Be More Convenient

On top of having to pay quite a bit of money in order to get your computer repaired, it can sometimes take a couple of days in order to get the process done. With so much of work becoming online now, you're going to want to get your computer functioning as quick as possible. If you knew how to do the replacement yourself, you can get it done in fifteen minutes, if that.

It Can Help Keep Up With Upgrades

This is more for people who play video games on PC, but in order to keep up with upgrades, you're going to want to know how to install the different parts yourself because most "IT guys" put that stuff off last in order to prioritize computers that need actual repairs first. Therefore, it can take weeks to make hardware upgrades. You should be able to upgrade the required parts yourself so that you can keep your computer up to date with the times.

In Conclusion

There are so many benefits to learning the basics of your computers and learning them in college is the perfect way to do it. With the advancements in technology, the demand for people who can do the basics is only going to get higher as time goes on.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
