More often than not, college students will change their major. It is hard to find something and stick to it. Once you do, you will know. There are a lot of reasons someone will change their major. They may not be happy with it, they may not see a future in that particular field or they just found something else they are more interested in. For me, it was a combination of all three.
All four years of high school I was determined to become a dentist. I do not remember why or how I even figured it out, but I did. I was going to go to college and become a dentist. Gross, right? Well, that is what I had my heart set on. After getting accepted into Saint Leo University, I was prepared to start my studies with biology. I attended "Bio Boot Camp," an early program for freshmen bio majors looking to get a head start and something went wrong. I am not going to lie, it was A LOT of work. Bio majors have my utmost respect. I did not choose to change my major just based on the difficulty because I could have definitely dealt with that in order to chase my dream, but I found myself no longer interested in biology as I once was. So, I started researching in order to find something I am interested in. This is how I came across a criminal justice.
I know what you are thinking, "Who gives up a potential three-figure paycheck to study the law?" Well, it was the best decision I could have made. I am now enthusiastic about what I am studying. Most of the time, my homework does not even feel like homework, more of research that I am eager to do. I finally found something to be passionate about and look forward to doing for the rest of my life. Of course, I am still deciding exactly which career within criminal justice I am going to pursue, but I have a much better understanding for what I want to do. I could not be happier with what I am studying because although I may not be able to provide excellent dental care to those who need it, I can still make a difference in my community.
Change your major. Change it once, twice, maybe even 10 times. Do what makes you happy and stick to that. Do your research and find out what it is that your school has to offer as far as majors and minors go. The process is simple and oh so worth it. Find something that is going to make you want to wake up in the morning and look forward to doing for the rest of your life, or at least until retirement. This is your future and you have to grab it by the horns and take control. In the end, do what makes YOU happy and study subjects you know you are passionate about. It will definitely show once you are out applying for jobs. May you have the best of luck in your studies whether you change them or not.
Sincerely,
A Very Indecisive College Student
