Magic On The Shelf: Summer Reading Recommendations

If you’re like me and love to catch up on your summer reading, then you will probably like this article. I have always loved the summer days of being inside (or outside, as long as I don’t fry like an egg!), with a nice glass of lemonade and a good book to read. Anyone that truly knows me will tell you that I am a bookworm. Some might see it as boring, but I truly enjoy reading books. Well, anyway, with this article, I wanted to give a few recommendations of my favorite books from my very own book shelf.

  1. Bliss by Shay Mitchell. You might know the actress Shay Mitchell from my favorite television show Pretty Little Liars. She portrays the character of Emily Fields. She not only plays a complex character in one of FreeForm’s #1 shows, but she is inspirational and cool, so she decided to write a book with her best friend. Bliss is a book about navigating your 20s, with stories from each of the authors, with each one having a different name in the book. It is filled with stories from their lives and at the end of each chapter, there is an inspirational quote relating to what they had learned from that experience. There are even a few yummy recipes in the book as well. Bliss is defined as a state of happiness and great joy, so Shay wants the reader to develop that joy in everyday life.
  2. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. Even though I am very introverted, I am always looking for ways to improve my life and my perspective. This book in particular has made me see myself in a different light and how I perceive certain situations in life. The Four Agreements are:Be Impeccable with Your Word, Don’t Take Anything Personally, Don’t Make Assumptions, and Always Do Your Best. These four agreements are promises that you make with yourself. You promise to use your words wisely. You promise to not take things so personally because most of the time, it actually has nothing to do with you. You promise to not make assumptions and get the facts first. You promise to always do your best and to be kinder to yourself.
  3. Unstoppable in Stilettos by Lauren Ruotolo. This is truly a book that will not only inspire you, but adds some humor as well. In this book, you will meet Lauren, a grown woman who is only 4’2, but has a fierce confidence that no one can bring down. As she says in the book, this is her homage to the way she lives her life. No matter what the doctors tell her, she is determined to always wear stilettos! She offers her tips on getting through tough times, loving yourself, and of course, fashion (especially shoes!). It is an inspirational read, with real-life advice that you can use.

Well, that is my list. There are many more that I could put on this list, but I wanted to give you a snippet of my favorites. I hope you get a chance to read one of these books and enjoy it from page to page.

Quick question: What books are on your list this summer?

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
