The World Lost A Talented Artist But These 4 Reasons Prove Mac Miller Will Never Be Forgotten

In This Article:

About a week ago, the world lost another talented artist. The drama surrounding his death has been monumental, and perhaps, unnecessary. Rather than focusing on the negatives of his death, let's try to remember him for the creative, positive person he was.

1. He was a musical genius (duh).

One of the many things Mac Miller will be remembered for is his musical talent. It's easy to say he'd been making great music for years now, and many of us were hoping for more. His last album, Swimming, was popular among many people. As a junior in college, my friends and I have been listening to his music since high school. It's hard to forget someone who makes such honest and beautiful art.

2. He was a good friend to many.

Outside of his art, Mac Miller was a good friend to many others in the music industry. After news of his death, many other artists posted positive, kind-hearted messages all over social media. While I did not know him personally (although I wish I did), many of the artists who posted about his death claimed they were losing a "good friend" or even a "brother." Artists like Kehlani, SZA, and more talked about all of the plans they had with Mac the following week. The loss of Mac Miller was a huge loss for many.

3. He was honest about his life and his struggle.

Many people respected Mac Miller, and still do, because of his honesty about substance abuse throughout his career. In fact, he remained honest about everything in his life, including struggling with mental health issues. Transparency can be hard to come by when it comes to celebrities, but he was always the exception.

You might ask, "Why does that matter? We get it, he was honest." But it's more important than that. Mental health is not a conversation that most public figures are willing to have, but the more openly it is discussed, the more people struggling with it won't feel alone.

4. He was (and is) an inspiration to many.

Giphy

The truth of the matter is that Mac was inspiring. He was creative, positive, and honest. Like many celebrities claimed after his death, he was a positive light who brought the good out of everyone. So let's try to remember him for that. Let's honor his life and everything he made out of 26 years by celebrating who he was and exemplifying it in our own lives. If you loved him and his music half as much as I did, you'll let him be remembered forever. Oh, and let's also keep the conversation about mental health going strong.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
