Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past few weeks, you must have heard Beyonce’s new surprise single, "Formation." Her song, video and Super Bowl performance have all stirred up a lot of controversy. Despite what the haters says, Beyonce is doing a good job by standing up and inadvertently being an active part of the Black Lives Matter movement. I love — and continue to love — Beyonce, and I respect her so much more now. She is a black female, and she is not going to pretend like she isn’t just to accommodate her parochial white fans. However, putting aside all the controversy, "Formation" is a song filled with kick-ass lyrics. Each one makes me fall in love with Beyonce more and more, every time I click replay.
1. "Y’all haters corny with that Illuminati mess."
Beyonce is coming at you haters and your petty Illuminati rumors. Since the beginning of time, Bey and her boo Jay-Z were rumored to be members of the super secret, super exclusive club. However, she starts her music video and song by addressing these concerns as plain-out corny. There are other topics that need to be discussed, and Beyonce is making sure her haters understand she won’t be wasting time on this one.
2. "I like my baby heir with baby hair and afros. I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils."
Bey’s haters do a lot to attack Beyonce and all she has accomplished, including attacking her beautiful baby girl, Blue. The haters even went as far as to start a petition calling for Jay-Z and Beyonce to comb Blue’s hair. Although the petition was said to be started as a joke, too many people signed it for it to be taken lightly. Here, Beyonce is expressing that she likes her baby heir (Blue) with baby hair and afros. She doesn’t care what you think. She likes the way her baby’s natural hair looks, and that’s all that should matter. She’s also unapologetically confirming to her haters that she likes her nose and doesn’t care for society's opinion on it.
3. "Earned all this money, but they never take the country out me. I got hot sauce in my bag, swag."
Here, Bey is reminding everyone that not only has she made millions and millions of dollars, but she also did it while still remembering her country roots. She reps Texas on the regular, and some southern traditions that she enjoys will never leave her (like carrying hot sauce in her bag). In addition, this lyric just shows what a boss Beyonce is. It’s as if she’s going, "Yeah I have hot sauce in my bag. You don’t?" I, too, wish to carry hot sauce in my bag from now on.
4. "I dream it. I work hard. I grind 'til I own it."
I’m sure we all know Beyonce did not walk out of the womb with the reputation of queen, nor did she wake up one day and randomly decide to sell out concert venues. Ever since Destiny’s Child, she’s been working to become an independent, financially stable woman. This lyric serves as a reminder that she wasn’t handed anything in life. Her dreams, her accomplishments and her legacy are all thanks to Bey herself. Beyonce is very notable for the "grind 'til I own it" mentality. Truth be told, we can all benefit from adopting this mentality.
5. "El Camino with the seat low, sippin’ Cuervo with no chaser."
Although I don’t know much about cars or El Caminos, sippin' Jose Cuervo with no chaser is definitely a boss move. Jose Cuervo, which is one of the most popular tequila brands, is a love it or hate it drink. Most people cringe at the idea of drinking tequila (even with a chaser), but Bey doesn’t even bat an eyelash at the idea of sipping on some Mexican water. She has the right idea, as it is said that if you drink tequila without a chaser, you wake up with no hangover. Maybe that’s Bey’s secret — no hangovers.
6. "When he f--k me good I take his ass to Red Lobster, 'cause I slay ... If he hit it right, I might take him on a flight on my chopper, 'cause I slay. Drop him off at the mall, let him buy some J’s, let him shop up."
Whoa, shout out to Jay-Z? Beyonce is clearly asserting her dominance in this lyric by stating that when her man pleases her, she pleases him (in other ways). Whether it’s taking Jay to Red Lobster or the mall so he can buy some new sneakers, she’s reminding us that good things come to those who are good to Bey. This is also an interesting interpretation of who wears the pants in this powerful relationship. I thoroughly believe that Beyonce and Jay-Z are equals, therefore he’s man enough to be showered in gifts by his thankful wife.
7. "You know you that b---h when you cause all this conversation. Always stay gracious, best revenge is your paper."
This is by far my favorite line in the song. This song does a lot to strike up the Black Power movement. In anticipation of all the hate/love and general talk, she knew she was going to receive, Bey included this line. She knows she’s the b---h because she can and will discuss things that rightfully attract a lot of attention. She also reminds all her fans and supporters to always stay gracious. She wants her fans to stay polite and civil, even while Bey and her fans work to break down barriers meant to oppress. The final line in the song reminds us all that the best way to achieve revenge against someone is to remind them that you are doing well on your own. To Bey this means achieving economic stability (getting paper) and giving your haters the middle finger in response.
It’s safe to say by now I have listened to "Formation" more times than I can count. It’s my new personal favorite song, and even though I am a white female, it’s my feel-good song. I love the way Beyonce is embracing where she comes from and unapologetically reminding fans that she is a member of the Black Power movement. Beyonce is badass and will continue to thrive while her haters stay mad. I love Beyonce — can’t wait for more.
