The Bullet-Proof Black Man
After watching the entire series of Family Guy for the hundredth time on Netflix, one night I decided to watch something new. That's when I came across the show, Marvel's Luke Cage.
The show is based in Harlem, New York, a city known for its rich black culture. The protagonist, Luke Cage, is an ex-con who works as a bartender and a cleaning man for the neighborhood's barber shop, Pops.
While in jail, Luke gains supernatural powers which causes him to be extremely strong and bullet proof. Luke faces a lot of trouble throughout the season, trying to stop the corruption happening in the town.
In my opinion, Cheo Hodari Coker, the creator of the series, depicted Cage in the best way possible. In a time where black males are being shot for simply wearing hoods and looking scary, Cage is known for a black hoodie. A black, hooded, bullet-proof super-hero... ironic. I think Coker was definitely sublimately shining some light on issues such as Trayvon Martin's death and the Black Lives Matter Movement.
