A Thank You Letter to My Best Guy Friend

Francois De La Rochefoucauld said it best. "A true friend is the greatest of all blessings."

To my best guy friend,

Thank you.

Thank you for always having my back. Despite arguments that we've overcome. Thank you for sticking up for me when girls got mean. For always being on my side even when I was probably wrong. For defending me when I'm not there to defend myself.

Thank you for always answering my calls and texts whether it be 2 PM or 2 AM. For knowing what to say when I'm crying so hard over the phone I can't breathe. For knowing when not to say anything but just listening to me rant.

Thank you for being my shoulder to cry on. Literally. For letting me ruin your shirt when I come up to you with mascara running down my face. For dealing with me when I'm a mess whether it be over a guy or any other reason. For not judging me and saying "I told you so" when I come to you in tears over the same guy for the hundredth time.

Thank you helping me pick out clothes when my indecisiveness takes over, but also for letting me help you when it becomes evident that you can't dress yourself. For letting me borrow clothes on gender bender days.

Thank you for introducing me to the song, "I don't fuck with you." For screaming the lyrics to it with me when I get bitter about someone that has done me wrong.

Thank you for your honesty. For telling me exactly what I need to hear even when I don't want to hear it. For making me tough. For telling me I need to move on when it's time. For telling me when I'm being sassy or when someone shouldn't treat me a certain way.

Thank you for introducing me to your family. For taking me to dinner. For having me over and for being a family to me when mine was going through a separation.

Thank you for coming to my softball games. For watching me struggle at the plate with a bat that was too heavy. For telling me what weight I should try. For watching my batting improve during my next at bat.

Thank you for pushing me to be the best that I can be. For questioning my grades and my priorities all throughout high school. For knowing what I can achieve when I keep my focus.

Thank you for keeping cheesy pinky promises. For riding your bike all the way to Walmart just for a pinky promise.

Most importantly, Thank you for asking me "How's life," and for becoming such a positive part of mine.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
