Low-Key New Year Resolutions For 2016

Which won't make you feel like garbage at the end of the year.

Low-Key New Year Resolutions For 2016

Another year has come to pass and we need to prepare ourselves for the next few weeks. Everyone will be posting either their New Year resolutions or complaints about other people and their resolutions. Especially when it comes to gym junkies who don't appreciate that the gym is crowded. (Ever think it's because everyone is on break and we have nothing to do?)

I normally had the mindset that resolutions for the new year always set you up for failure. You make these resolutions when you have the most free time because you are on break. Then school hits you like a brick wall and it's hard not to eat a whole pizza between crying over exams.

However, this year I have decided that we should be looking at resolutions a little differently. Instead of trying to make big changes right from the start, maybe we shouldn't look at the idea of a resolution so seriously. The new year should start off stress-free with simple resolutions that don't make you feel like a literal trash can if you can't follow through with them.

1. Save more SnapChat videos.

I promise you, this is something you will thank yourself for by the end of the year. After living with the best roommates I have ever had, I have learned that the stupid SnapChat videos make for the funniest videos I have ever had. We forget about them for weeks and then get to laugh all over again when we stumble across them. Keep these moments from your silly college years that you can stumble across on your laptop one or five years down the road.

2. Make your bed every day.

Woah, talk about a commitment. But hear me out. With a nicely made bed, you can probably get away with having piles of clothes on the floor and your school bag sprawled everywhere. Plus, it gives other people the idea that "Hey, this person might kind of have their life together." Which we all know isn't true. Most importantly, however, you will love yourself when you come home from a long day to an inviting comfy bed.

3. Keep a plant alive.

I got three little cacti for Christmas and I am probably more excited than I should be to have them in my room. Luckily cactus takes little to no care other than the sun. Other succulents are good, too, if you aren't feeling the responsibility of watering a plant every or every other day. Now keeping the plant alive for a whole year is going to be something that you will be really proud of when 2017 rolls around. It's the little things.

4. Take your makeup off after going out.

Specifically after going out is what is important here. Usually, we are pretty good at this, it's part of our night time routine. If we skip an average day, it's normally not too bad either. Yet, when we go out we typically wear more makeup than the average day. We also typically skip removing the pounds of makeup and drunkenly stumble into bed. Taking off your makeup in your 20s is so important for your skin, we need to remember this, sober or not.

5. Better Instagram Captions.

Yes, that's right. We could all use better Instagram captions. It is time to stop doing the 'one mysterious emoji' or common song lyric. We are intelligent human beings who owe it to ourselves and our Instagram aesthetic to think of more creative captions.

6. Delete those numbers.

They are not going to call. They are jerks. We need to stop torturing ourselves.

7. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This lovable shrug text emoticon needs to become our inspiration for 2016. It is the absolute perfect reminder not to care about the stupid little things. School, work, family and friends. These four are always the most important parts of life. Everything else, just give it a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

What's perfect about these is that it's perfectly okay if you forget once in a while. Sometimes it's hard not to care, to delete that number, or even get out of bed to make it. Just remember that sometimes little changes can make you feel better about yourself, and that's really the only real resolution to have for 2016.

To be happy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
