Women have different shapes and sizes. Some women are thick, and some women are thin. Some women love their bodies while some women do not love their bodies. There is a particular movie titled “Phat Girls” that highlights how thick women are seen in the society and how the women who are called thick see themselves. The movie shows how a thick woman learned to love her body and dress in a way that suits her body figure. The lady who played the main character even found love in a Nigerian man and she finally found happiness. She even went to Nigeria to start a family with him. In Nigeria, women who are thick are praised and even complimented. Women who are thick are seen as the curvy women.
Some women are made to feel uncomfortable because of their body weight or shape. That is why body positivity is very important. The media affects our self esteem because women are conscious of their bodies. People talk about a woman’s figure and how she presents herself. People on social media criticize when a woman is overweight or she has lost too much weight. Sometimes teenagers aim to look for role models in Pop Culture. Examples of pop culture role model are Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj. These role model set an example of the cool way to dress and look.

They set the example of what a lady should look like. I grew up a bit chubby and my mates made fun of me. I grew up with low self esteem and low sense of worth. So I grew up with the mentality that I should be thin. I kept a strict diet and exercised daily. I then became thin and people still made fun of me. I then decided to be who God made me and accept myself as I am.
Body positivity means having a healthy body that is functional and has the right weight and height. Body positivity is very important as if affects self esteem and worth. Body positivity means loving body you have and appreciating that body. I had a classmate who was overweight and she learned to love her body even though it was hard because even her family called her “fat” and “ugly”.
Media gives us pictures of Beyonce as what body goals should be and young girls starve and force themselves to look thin. Body positivity is also important.
And of course, claiming beauty in a culture that has historically denied it can be genuinely empowering. While I stand with and support anyone who finds power, visibility, or joy in reclaiming the word and the concept of beauty, it shouldn’t be compulsory. There should be space in body positivity for women like me, for anyone who wants access to confidence, happiness, and self-worth without having to use beauty as the vehicle to get there. Body goals should be to feel good and love one’s body and not to look good for society. There are some articles about body positivity.
