Imagine how long it takes you to draw a picture or to paint a simple setting. Now imagine adding fine details and small touches to that project. It may take hours, days or even weeks for some artists to be satisfied with the finished product of that one piece of art. However for the creative minds behind Loving Vincent, they have gone above and beyond anyone's wildest expectations. Loving Vincent is a feature film currently still in development that depicts the life of famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. Hugh Welchman and Dorota Kobiela, the producer and director of the film, had the idea 6 years ago to try and bring this story to life by animating the movie using only oil paintings. With such a huge task at hand the team hired almost 100 painters trained specifically in the Van Gogh style to create a remarkably surreal experience for the audience. If you aren't familiar with any of Van Gogh's famous works, which you definitely should be if you ever had an art class in your life, then here are some pieces including "The Starry Night" and "Cafe Terrace at Night".
The team behind this enormous effort resides in northern Poland at the Gdansk Science and Technology Park, where the artists have personal stations to continue their work on the frames in the film each. Over 63,000 oil paintings were created throughout the film's progression. They come in each day for hours at a time working for days if not weeks on a single frame in this 87 minute feature, and each frame accounts for only one second on the screen. One second! It's truly a labor of love for these artists to dedicate their time and efforts to encapsulating the essence and story of Vincent Van Gogh. As the film progresses through the life of said artist, it also raises the possibility of his death being a murder instead of what many assumed was suicide.
With such vivid imagery and strong casting for the film, Welchman and Kobiela hope to take home an Oscar this year with their ambitious piece, and if we're going by the trailer for it, then their dream is more than capable of coming true. Loving Vincent is scheduled for release this October, so I hope you're lucky enough to see it.
