If you, like me, were shocked by Disney's decision to close their hand drawn animation department, never fear! "Loving Vincent," a film that started production in 2011, is bringing back more than just Vincent Van Gogh back from the dead. In fact, the entire movie is going to be completely painted by hand, marking it as the first hand painted film to ever be made!
The film, itself, centers around the life of Vincent Van Gogh, presenting itself in the artist's famous style. The plot of the movie comes through the mapping of both his paintings and his letters, making it sure to be a number one must see for both artists and history buffs.
"Loving Vincent" is being produced by Oscar award winning team, BreakThru Films and had garnered much attention and funding from their kickstarter, which raised nearly 76,000 USD. The group, working on the movie in Poland, have a team of over a hundred artists working on the project, which released it's first trailer a few days ago.
Now if it hasn't quite hit you just how amazing this movie is guaranteed to be, in order to animate an entire movie in oil paintings alone, there is a minimum of 12 oil paintings per second needed. And considering that the artists aren't able to just copy and paste because everything will be done by hand, it's enough to make us sweat! The incredibility of this film lies in its dedication to bringing back hand drawn art to the film industry and taking a form of that (oil painting) and bringing it to the silver screen for everyone to see.
In a world that is growing increasingly driven towards computer animation and CGI, "Loving Vincent" is breaking the norms. However, the film requires an enormous staff of artists to participate in bringing Van Gogh's paintings to life. In fact, if you are an artist and are interested in working on the film, you can apply here.
