I always used to hear people say it’s normal to change your major, but I never thought I'd be one to do so. Ever since I can remember, my plans consisted of business school. Being so young I foolishly thought my plans would never change, but life proved me wrong.
After my first month into college, I started finding new interests. I slowly began to realize how much I loved writing. I was in a new city, making new friends and forming a new life; thrilled by new beginnings, I turned to writing as an emotional release.
Going away to college made life wholly unpredictable, and as I was enjoying my first year, I also wanted to share it. I thought to myself that there was no better way to share my story than to write my very own perspective. I fell in love with the idea of writing my story/short stories, so I marked a goal I still hold true today; to write and publish a book.
As I continued writing, I understood what writing meant to me; it gave me freedom of expression without interruption. So, I kept writing in hopes that one day people would travel with me in my stories.
The moment I realized becoming a writer was a potential career interest was when I knew I had to change to my major. After being set on business for so long, it wasn't easy to recognize business school wasn't for me anymore. However, after changing my major to Communication Studies and adding a minor in English, I can genuinely say I'm happy with my decision. I gained more than I lost and now have a new mindset and goals.
At the time I didn't realize the immense change this held. One minute I was changing my major, the next I was transferring schools, but that’s a story for another day. Anyway, I'll leave you with this: don’t be afraid of your new interests, you never know where change can take you. I think it's important to walk with an open mind and be ready to be amazed by what's out there; I know I am.
