I Love My Job

Yes you read the title correctly, I did in fact say that I love my job. I know what you are thinking, this guy must do something awesome for a living. You might think it's not awesome, but I am a server. I have been serving for about four years now and honestly I enjoy it. I have numerous jobs and this is the most fun that I have at a job besides the future fun that is in store for me at my upcoming job at Walt Disney World.

I personally don't think I will be making a career as server for the rest of my life, but it has done me no wrong as a college student. Serving is the perfect job for any college student who is looking to make ends meet. It's a very flexible job and the money is usually immediate. Most restaurants are hiring seasonal, so there is usually a position open. There are many of people that are skeptical and believe that serving isn't a real job. It's job that is very hard at points, but can be very rewarding.

The rewards of serving aren't just tips, it can also open up the door for meeting people from all over. I have encountered people from different countries that were visiting and also people from other states. I have learned more about people from the short time that I spend serving them, but have gotten rewards for the service I provided. I have received numerous business cards and even a job offer to be a server for a catering company in Florida. You never know who you will run into at a restaurant. The possibilities are endless, so keep an eye out.

The one thing I love most about serving is the money is immediate. It's such a relief at the end of the night being able to walk out with cash without waiting a week or two for a paycheck to come. The thing that people need to understand is that yes, we in fact get paid hourly, but only for $2.38 an hour. So If I work a 10 hour day, my paycheck is going to be very small and pretty much cover the cost of taxes. Tips are a server’s main source of income, so it is very important to tip your servers.

I think my favorite part of my job is giving people the best service I can and leaving them with a smile on their face. I am a very optimistic individual and love to take a bad situation and turn it good. I try to make every table have a memorable experience. I am there for the customers and they could be celebrating a birthday or some big milestone in their life and I get to be a part of that. Try to find the things that you enjoy most out of your job and that will let you know if you love your job as much as I do.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
