Love Yourself: A Poem

Before taking care of others, be there for yourself.

You are the pure definition of beauty.

Whether your curves are peeking through that tight red crop top

Or your collarbone is glistening with sweat on a scorching summer afternoon.

Whether you woke up an hour and a half early to create the perfect smoky-eye

And are gluing fake pharmacy lashes as you're putting on your high heels

Or are rushingly putting on sweatpants with sneakers—

You are gorgeous.

Your favorite tee might be from a thrift store

Which you bought the day your hair cooperated more with the wind than your brush.

But that doesn't mean you are not perfect.

You struggle to look in the mirror with confidence sometimes

But the stranger who you passed by on the way to the library yesterday

Thought you were absolutely stunning

Because of the way you smiled receiving a text from an old friend.

You may blend in with the crowd,

Afraid to vocalize your identity

Because you don't need more anxiety from glaring, judgmental people.

But speak up anyway.

They don't care as much as you think they do.

Give it a try because someone you love is always listening—you are listening.

Be your biggest supporter

Because in one way or another—you deserve love,

Primarily from yourself.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."
