To my soul sister,

Every once in a while, people enter your life that you don't think will have a huge impact on you, but then one day you look back and you're awestruck because you couldn't have been more wrong. Some people have that effect, they come in and you have no idea how much your life is going to change, and then when the change happens you're having too much fun to notice.

That's exactly what it was like with you!

I like to think a soul sister is very different from a regular sister. I'm an only child so I don't have any sisters biologically, but I have a few friends I'd consider sisters and one of them is you. I think of you as my soul sister rather than just a sister because you get me in ways that others don't and I think it's mutual for you. You understand everything I say, whether it's about school or friend drama or of course boys because it's funny how they think we're the complicated ones when I doubt they've met themselves. Like, bye. When I talked to you for the very first time I just knew I wanted to be your friend because you were the type of person who seemed to radiate happiness and at the time that's what I wanted in my own life, my own happiness. We became super close incredibly fast and it was almost as if we'd known each other our whole lives, actually being sisters separated at birth but of course that's not true since you're a year younger than me. You started referring to me as your soul sister and I guess that's when it hit me that you were one of those people who have had a huge impact on my life and I didn't notice the true extent of that impact until I looked back. A lot of my happier memories from this past year, such as my last birthday and this past summer, were made extra special because I spent them with you, especially this summer where we were working together for an entire month. Shout-out to us for not even getting close to becoming sick of each other over this summer and instead having to be separated because we needed to branch out instead of being attached at the hip. Talk about best compliment ever, am I right?

You're one of my biggest supporters and you say I'm one of yours which makes me super happy. You always know just what to say to make me feel better and I can go to you and say anything and you'll always have my back and keep my secrets. You defend me and tell me what I need to hear even if it's not what I want to hear and it's the best kind of tough love. You're the type of person that everyone needs in their lives and I'm glad I have you out of all those kinds of people in mine. I see your successes and I get beyond proud though I'm really biased so I'm likely not the best source of getting a real feel for whatever it is you've done but as the super-biased person I am you rock and I am so glad I'm fortunate enough to know you. One day you'll be doing what you love and people will know your name and I'll be there saying "I knew she'd be awesome from the start" because let's face it, it's true.

From those gross Snapchats with the crazier filters we send of ourselves making faces we'd send to maybe three other people to the inside jokes and the Instagram pictures and captions that have a great angle and the ones with a less-than-great angle (you know the ones I'm talking about), we've had more than a million memories in the short time we've known each other and I can't wait to see the others we'll make in these coming weeks, months, and years. You're one of my best friends and I love you to the moon and stars and beyond and I'll always be there for you.

Love you always,

Your soul sister.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
