On Nov. 9, 2016, at approximately 2:28 p.m., a female Muslim SDSU student was confronted by two males in what evolve into a robbery. While she was confronted by them, they made derogatory and political remarks.
According to the victim's friend, Alisha Sharif, the robbers referred to President-elect Donald Trump before attacking the woman and stealing her car. The female Muslim student left the area to report the crime, and when she returned with officers, they discovered that her vehicle had been stolen as well.
"They were saying things like, 'Now that Trump is president get ready to start fleeing.' They proceeded to push her around and she wrestled with them," Sharif described.
Because of these actions, campus police is investigating these as hate crimes. In view of this, President Hirshman cited this and encouraged students to stand in solidarity against 'hate' on campus.
The very next day, there was a protest. Just not the one that should've been encouraged.
In what led up to the organization of this particular protest, it became very clear it wasn't really about standing up against 'hate' on campus. Instead, it was about protesting on President-elect Trump.
Throughout the entire walkway to areas in the school, there were chants that would switch from "Love Trumps Hate" to "Not our President".
Make no mistake, I don't enjoy the state of things that was wrought by this election period. But to use this opportunity to protest that, instead of protesting in concern of this hate on campus is just unacceptable.
This was a moment to truly be above that, to be above this 'hate' that's been happening at protests. Instead, we just perpetuated the same thing that's going around the country this past week (thankfully not to the degree of other areas).
I truly hope for our sakes, we'll be able to move forward in a positive direction in the near future.
