In recent weeks, coverage from the Olympic games in Rio have overrun the media. Everywhere there are stories about amazing feats accomplished by the athletes. From the outstanding performances of Simone Biles, to the final Olympic victory of Michael Phelps, and everything in between. However, one of the things these games have really highlighted is the love people around the world share for good sportsmanship, compassion, and a giving spirit.
In the 5000 meter race, Nikki Hamblin was running packed closely with other runners. However she stumbled and fell, hitting the ground in the fetal position to guard herself from the other runners. Her fall also caused the U.S runner, Abbey D'Agostino, who was directly behind her to fall as well. D'Agostino was quickly back on her feet pulling Hamblin up with her. As the two girls moved to continue the race, it was not long before D'Agostino began to falter. It was clear that she was in pain and later confirmed that she had sustained an injury to her right leg as a result of the fall. When D'Agostino fell on all fours it was then that the New Zealander had her chance to offer the U.S runner some support. Once the race was over, Hamblin and D'Agostino embraced. Fame, victory, and even the race absent from their minds as they shared a moment they will never forget.
This world wide companionship was expressed through many of the different events. Starting with the entrance of the refugee team during the opening ceremonies and the world wide support which they received, to the synchronized swimming routine performed by the Russian team, part of which was made to honor the Brazilian culture.
In a world that is suffering from violence and fear, it is truly heart warming to see how the Olympics bring nations together, and how love knows no borders.
