Why I Love My Small Christian University
Kajsa Carlson

Summer is coming to a end and am I am getting ready to go back to school. Unlike when I was going back to high school or middle school, I am actually excited for the school year to start. I loved my time at home with my family, but I also love my school. I knew from the moment I heard of Lipscomb University and learned about it that it what the place for me, and I still feel the same way. Here are 7 of the reasons why I love my small Christian university.

The People

The people I have met while at Lipscomb are some of the best people I know. I've met some of my best friends here as well as all the amazing students, teachers, faculty and workers. You also get the chance to know and see the people in your department regularly and there a sense of community throughout campus.

The Teachers

The teachers I've had have been amazing. They care about their students and work to help us anyway we need. The class sizes are just small enough that each teacher knows your name and who you are which really helps you succeed. I’ve never felt overlooked to forgotten by a teacher.

Social Clubs

At Lipscomb we have social clubs (our version of sororities and fraternities). I love my social club because it's filled with girls that truly care about me and we're also the perfect size where we all know each other. I wasn't interested in social clubs at first but came to realize it was something I wanted to do. It's the perfect way to gain friendships and get involved on campus.

Location, Location, Location

Lipscomb is in the perfect location. Campus is it own little area and you don't have to worry about walking too far to get to class, but we're also close to downtown Nashville. This allows us to see and do all the things the city has to offer without having to be right in it all. I’ve also grown to love the south which is a nice change from my home up north.

Campus Size

The campus size is perfect. Getting from one side of campus to the other is never more than 5 to 6 minutes. This also means everything is right by our rooms. If you want to get food, go to class or check out a game, it's all right there and easily accessible.

Chapel

Lipscomb requires going to chapel and getting a certain amount of chapel credits. It's easy to see this as a nuisance when you would rather sit down to eat lunch or spend more time studying, but I've loved having chapel. It's a time when we all get to gather and worship. We have had some great guest speakers that have shared some amazing testimonies and stories which have been some of my highlights from each year.

It's the right fit for me

It's easy for me to speak highly of my decision to go to a small Christian university because I know it's the right fit for me. I wouldn't recommend a school like Lipscomb it wasn't where you belonged. Wether a small private school or a larger well known school is right for you, I recommend going where you belong and where you see yourself succeeding.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
