What does Sing-Song mean to you? If you attend ACU like I do, even if you've never been in Sing-Song, you know what I'm talking about. It's sort of like the glue that holds us all together. If you don't go to ACU, then you're probably quite confused when you first hear about Sing-Song. It’s not just a singing competition. It’s not just a dance show. It’s not just an event where a bunch of college students put on weird make-up and wear unique costumes. It’s so much more.
Sing Song is friendships made. Sing Song is laughing until your sides hurt. Sing Song is practically a cultural expression for us. Sing-Song is the ACU difference. Sing Song is exhausting, exhilarating, and so totally worth it.
Flashback to freshman year. As someone who has been in choir and performed all my life, being in sing-song was a given, so I showed up to Sing-Song auditions nervous and excited. I didn’t make the time, and I was heart-broken. Not to brag, but I have a really good voice. At least according to about a million church ladies and all my family. Hey, maybe I’m wrong, but I felt jiffed that I didn’t make the act. However, looking back, I’m pretty glad I didn’t make the freshman act. You see, Zeta Rho, a relatively small club on campus, sent out an email to all the freshman who didn’t make the team. This email invited us to join them in their act. I graciously accepted the invite, becoming an ID card with a number of other freshman and the women of Zeta Rho. Little did I know that this spiral into me join the club a year later. In Sing Song, I got to know a number of the girls in club, and I found myself connected with them. One girl invited me to go to their Spring Picnic after Sing Song, and the deal was basically sealed. I rushed in the Fall, had second guesses, and then ended up pledging in the Spring of 2016. Sing Song introduced me to the club I call home and subsequently some of my favorite people on campus. Without Sing Song, I might have ended up pledging Zeta Rho anyway, but honestly, I have no idea. If I didn’t already have a few friendships that were formed during Sing Song, I may have found myself attracted to a different club, and while I have nothing against the other clubs on campus, for me Zeta Rho fills a unique place in my heart that I’m not sure a different club could have filled.
This past weekend, I was yet again in Zeta Rho’s act, this time as a shining star (quite literally, although I do think we were the stars of the show *wink*). We may not have won any awards, but if you attended Sing-Song this year, you have to admit… we won your heart, and we’ve got big things ahead of us. Watch out, Sing-Song 2018!
