In the wake of the presidential election, it’s been hard to comprehend what happened. I still believe that we can do things to make changes and that’s going to be hard for us to do. I don’t like Donald Trump or what he stands for(i.e. Ignorance, bigotry, a bully, racism, xenophobia to say the least), but I am forced to accept the outcome of the results. This is for the people I know who talked about supporting Trump and for those who don’t see what I see.
In a room filled with minorities,
The news broke like a glass of wine hitting the tile.
Loud and calm
Silent and disruptive
Rage, frustration and worry
Ready to call out anyone and everyone
But do you blame us?
The election proved to us the majority is white
So why should I wear my sticker with pride?
I feel like I’m slowly losing
The slippery slope of everything I don’t want to be is getting steeper:
My hills will be harder to climb.
Because I am a woman
I don’t feel safe;
In a society where male privilege is granted at sight,
In a place where we have less of a worth,
We take a back seat because you say it’s ideal
But we need to rise above the hands that hold us under the water
Because I am Chicana
I worry for my friends and family.
The wall that you speak of is already in place
Creating barriers for families that shouldn’t even be there.
I’ve heard your plan for the economy is supposed to be great
That things will be fixed because you are a business man
But all I can is see is another name on the list of failures.
They tell me that you can’t do most of the things you say,
They tell me that your speeches shouldn’t be taken so seriously
But I wonder if they can see the hate that’s in your eyes
Unapologetically willing to promote violence
Or perpetuating the rise of words of hate.
Do they not see what you do?
How your words have make living harder for some,
While they say that this is their right?
Can they not see that the man that you are can cause our world to crumble?
It’s easy to joke about what you would do in international relations,
But for others we see a concern.
We only want to see another morning sun rise
Without the fear that we won’t see it again tomorrow.
But just like most of us,
I underestimated you.
I had higher hopes for people,
So sure that others would see Trump through other eyes.
From the eyes of the minorities,
Those like the Latinos, LGBTQ+ community, women, Muslims, and the never ending list of people you had no problem with attacking
But I assure you,
We will not be so quick to do it again.
We are prepared for a fight,
Taking up arms and practicing our rights
The ones that you say you defend
But all I wonder is if they will be taken away,
In the exact moment we make our voices heard.
You may not want to hear us,
But we will constantly remind you that we are here.
I’ve heard some people say that now that we have our answer, there is no need to panic. Or they were questioning why people are protesting Trump’s election. The fact that you don’t see Trump for his personality and characteristics that he’s so clearly portrayed through all forms of social media and his speeches, worries me. I see what his plans are and I not only worry about my future but the future of others. I've seen people refusing to be friends with people opposing views, but I don't want to play into the hate. I remain your friend and I respect both you and him. I'm just going to hope and pray for the best.
To President Trump,
I really hope that you prove me wrong. While I have serious concerns that have been put on the back burner because I worry what you will do, I pray that you are not who you portray yourself to be. It has been easy to see why so many people have fallen for the words of your supporters, but your own words and actions drown them out. The behavior and language that has been constantly displayed in your rallies worries me. Because while you want to “Make America Great Again” it seems like you’ve not been able to see the good that has come since the end of an era most of us were grateful that ended. Please prove me and many like me wrong. Understand that we will fight to be heard and go against the voices that brought themselves out only to vote for you. That we will not let things just be taken from us because you decided that there needs to be change. Because, “No one is above the law”, right? I also want to thank you. While you make your speeches and seemingly unite people with words of hatred, you remind us that America still has much more change to make in regards to race, religion etc. Thank you for revealing that some people don’t see how destructive those words can be. Thank you for also uniting people who are ready and willing to fight the long and hard battles to make sure that their livelihoods are not taken away. All I ask is for you to prove me wrong.
From,
A seriously concerned college student
