I love Rick and Morty. It’s one of those shows that isn’t going to appeal to everyone. It has a weird animation style, it is wildly offensive, and some of the plots could definitely go over people’s heads and be a little too weird for them. For me, all of those things are why I think it is great.
I started watching Rick and Morty not too long ago. I binged the first season in about two weeks and at that point season two was eight episodes in so I binged those too. Admittedly I started watching the show expecting just a ridiculous show that makes me laugh. That is what I get most weeks, but along with that I’ve learned that this show is much more than that. The stories being told in this show are ridiculous. There is no doubt about that. What most people don’t understand though, if they don’t watch it, is that at its core Rick and Morty is about a lonely man who has come back into his daughter’s life and is trying to become closer to her and her children. He is mean and cruel to them and acts like he doesn’t care, but as the show goes on the cracks begin to show.
This show has legitimate heart to it. It’s buried deep, but it is there. There are episodes that focus on Beth (Rick’s daughter; Morty’s mother) and Jerry’s (Morty’s father) relationship and how it is incredibly flawed. Rick’s loneliness is referenced more than once which leads to arguably the some of the darkest moments in the show. How dark the show gets can catch you off guard if you’re not expecting it. This scene is an example of that…
When I first watched that scene I legitimately had to pause the video and just think about what was said. It was incredibly poignant and well written.
What I’m getting at is that this show is hilarious, smart, and at times incredibly dark which is why I love it. I would suggest giving it a shot because it is definitely worth it.
