What Is Love?

Why knowing God's love helps us love others.

What Is Love?
Bedlam Mag

What exactly is love? Is it some warm fuzzy feeling we all hear of? Is it the feeling we get when we hear that big L word? Or is it everything other than that special person being blurred? You see we feel this earthly love, one that may come and may go. But what if I told you that "love" may be something we only think we know. Yes, I get it, we love our neighbor, love our family, and put our significant other on a pedestal. But compared to our human love, God's love is exceptional.

So you heard the story that God gave His one and only Son. You heard the famous words saying "it is done". Do you really understand this sacrifice? Or will your human knowledge simply suffice? We cannot reduce God's love to something we can understand. Every victory of ours is one that He has planned. God gave His one and only Son to die on that cross. He did this so we could live in freedom, all because of His loss. If that isn't love, then I'm not sure what is. He didn't do it for a grade, not a test or a quiz. He did it because He so loved this earth. He did this so that you could know and understand your own self-worth. So hear me out when I say it. He didn't do it for His own glory, He didn't do it for His self-benefit. God loves you through all of your highs and lows. He loves you when your sorrow lessens and when it grows. He knows what you've been through, and He knows what you've done. But if you ask Him about grudges, He will tell you He has none. You see we serve a God who is faithful and steadfast in His love. We serve a God who loves us more than we can even dream of.

We know that God made a sacrifice. We know that He has paid the price. God's love cannot be reduced to something we humans can comprehend, but it is a love that will follow us to the very end. So if God loved us enough to sacrifice His one and only Son, why would we keep that love away from anything or anyone? We are all God's creations, made perfect in His image. So why does everything seem to be a competition, a battle, or a scrimmage? Why are we criticizing girls and telling them they aren't good enough? Why are we ridiculing boys just because they aren't tough? Since when have the standards of this world determined who gets our consent? I don't think that is what God meant. Now, there is just one more thing I want to discuss. We only love because He first loved us. So, keep this in mind when you're feeling cold and cruel. Let it inspire you to be more loving, let it be your fuel. Let God's love inspire you when times get tough. Let God's love overcome you, let it be enough.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
