I love the sound of rain. It's one of my most favorite noises in the world. The way it slowly starts, one raindrop, then another, and one more. Eventually, you're feeling so many rain drops you lose count. I love getting lost in the rain, feeling it, absorbing it, having to wipe away water tears from my eyes just to see. How puddles are forming in roads and on sidewalks and driveways and an urge comes over to jump in all the puddles. Splashing until your socks are portable puddles and shoes are little boats. Then your mom's scolding at you for running outside in the pouring rain, but you take it with a grain of salt because you know she used to do the same.
I love how rain can be so complex. That's what makes it beautifully lovely. Sometimes it's slow and subtle, sometimes it's fast and pouring, others it just doesn't wanna stop and starts a flood. Rain can bring happiness and feelings of peace, it can also bring fear and chaos. It can be silent if it's falling on the grass or loud as hell if it's crashing on a tin roof. It can put people to sleep or keeps them up all night better than coffee can. That's usually when it's storming though, which I also enjoy. The sound of thunder opening up for the lightning, as if they're a rock show. The rain are all the bands because the music never stops, the thunder is letting you know what's coming, and shortly after the lightning performance begins. That's what keeps some people up at night, the intense storm show, others find it as soothing as a lullaby. I'm one of the people who fall asleep to crashing rain, booming thunder and purple lightning.
I can't say why rainy days turn up my poetic volume or why when it's pouring rain I grab out a notebook, pen, drink tea and let the rain be the only sound I hear. I don't put on a chick flick or a horror movie or listen to indie, I listen to all the rain drops and let that be my music. I let it be my inspiration for writing, I let it calm me down if I'm stressed. Rain itself is a beautiful, chaotic, calming poem. Not everyone can see the words falling down from the sky though.
