I have recently begun watching the show Queer Eye and though I judged it at first, I found that it is so much better and deeper than I ever thought it would be. Although at first, I thought it was just a show about fashion and these men trying to change these people into people that they are not, it is actually so much more than that. These men have such incredible hearts and personalities and are so loving and supportive to the people that they makeover.
My number one favorite thing about the show is that they do not try to change the people they makeover too much. For example, they would not take a woman who is extremely tomboy and make her dress extremely girly and in high heels all the time. They will give her more clothes that will fit her body well and flatter her, but they will not put her constantly in something that is uncomfortable and that she doesn't enjoy. Even with men too, they will not cut their hair too much or change them too much into something that is too different for them and they don't like. They explain to them what they are doing and why, and they will even ask their opinions about it and make sure they're okay with what they've done.
Another thing I love is how relational the show is as well. The people from Queer Eye, "the Fab 5", really invest in the people and build relationships with the people they makeover. They ask them why they do what they do, what their experiences are, and really open up to them. The people usually become very vulnerable and open with them. The show becomes about so much more than just fashion, but about relationships and personal growth as well. The show is also about lifestyle. The Fab 5 works with the people on things like cooking, spending time with their kids, hospitality, working hard, and more. For example, one person they worked with was a transgender male who had been trying to get his license changed to a male and wasn't able to. So one of the men, Karamo, goes with him to the DMV to get his license changed and hugs and cries with him to celebrate the life accomplishment that he had been wanting to achieve so long.
Queer Eye is about fashion, lifestyle, relationships, openness, growth, and culture. Every episode is so different containing gays, straights, old, young, men, women, black, white, everything. From a white cop to a black lesbian woman, there is so much diversity within the show that makes it about culture as well. The show makes me cry almost every episode. It is so heartwarming, encouraging, and motivating.
