Why I Love 'Pretty Little Liars'

'Cause two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.

Why I Love 'Pretty Little Liars'

For the past six years, I have been religiously watching Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family/FreeForm. When most people hear that, they look at me like I have six heads. They worry that my health has been compromised.

But I have one thing to say: This show is literally everything.

If you are not familiar with the show, Pretty Little Liars (PLL) is about these group of teenage girls who have a missing friend, are being targeted by someone named 'A', and try to figure out why they are being targeted and why their friend has gone missing. But that very small description does not grasp the intensity of the whole show. PLL has been taking its time revealing who 'A' is over the course of the show. We've had some 'A' possibilities and a "reveal" (I say this lightly, I'll try having no spoilers). But even with all that, the show continues to grow and be more suspenseful than ever before. It's equally ridiculous and equally amazing.

No matter what season you are watching, the plot twists are always becoming thicker and thicker. One thing that I really enjoy is how much the show makes you think. It's like a never-ending road map that takes you deeper and deeper into dark forests and creepy graveyards. You never know what you are going to see. During some episodes, I felt myself trying to uncover the big secret by the end of the episode and I am always fooled and foiled.

Another thing is that you will always fight with the characters through the screen. Marlene King is the queen of making her characters make terrible directions. You love them, you hate them. You love to hate them. You hate to love them. My only critique is that their lives are somewhat on repeat. They kind of don't grow up even though we have that five year time hop. But maybe that is the point? Maybe King wants us to keep thinking of them as the pretty little liars who are stuck in a web of lies that never ages.

Always be prepared to never have a favorite PLL. Sometimes I am always rooting for Emily or Hanna to have a great life on the show, but then again, I cannot get enough of Spencer's sassy-ness. Aria is so innocent but I know she hides more than she portrays which makes me love her even more. And do not even get me started on Allison. At first, their personalities molded together but the more secrets you know from each season, you are able to see them as who they are.

Pretty Little Liars also makes you realize that you are glad to live the life you live. Just think about it, if you lived in Rosewood with Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer you would probably go insane from the never ending stalking, unknown texts, and house explosions (okay, that happened once). But after seeing the credits appear on the screen after a crazy Halloween special, I sigh in relief that I am not even close to living a life as horrible as that. Those girls have been through a lot. And I mean, A LOT. But it reminds me that they are stronger than people actually think and that is quite awesome.

So my question to you is this: I gotta secret, can you keep it?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
