Why I Love Playing the Bassoon

And Why YOU Should Learn It

Why I Love Playing the Bassoon
David Kinder

In schools across America, kids in fourth or fifth grade are exposed to either band or orchestra. Eight years ago, I was one of those kids. I chose to play the trombone at first; that did not go well as my arms were too short to move the slide for all of the notes. The next year I switched to the Alto Saxophone and I really enjoyed it. But in 7th grade, my band director said, “Hey Joel, wanna play the bassoon?” Without knowing what a bassoon was, and without hesitating, I, of course, said yes. It has enriched my life ever since.

Reason #1

People will ask you what the heck that thing is, and then you can nerd out about it for the next five minutes while you give them a complete history of the bassoon, along with the various makers, techniques, and pieces. And since you’re reading this, you may as well know about the bassoon.

The Gold Standard of bassoon brands is Heckel. They have been operating in Germany for over 100 years. Also Fox, Moosmann, Wolf, Bell, and Buffet who all make great instruments.

When playing the bassoon, your two thumbs alone will operate from twelve to sixteen different keys and levers. And when trying to play certain notes, you must “flick” a certain key and let it go; if you don’t flick the key, the note will play down an octave.

The most famous bassoon concerto ever written is Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in Bb K191 if you wanted to know. It is definitely worth listening to. Also, theme from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Peter and the Wolf, and countless other movies feature the bassoon.

NOW YOU CAN BE A NERD LIKE ME! HOORAY!

Reason #2

You get to make your own reeds like a hipster without the side affects of being one. Making reeds is a very interesting process and while you make them you can multitask by watching TV. Now you could be a productive couch potato! Absolutely Awesome!!

Reason #3

You can sneak up on people and play a low Bb in their ear. (Lets just say that they are quite shocked the first time) Imagine a foghorn next to your ear, but it sounding lower. WOW.

Reason #4

There is a bassoon quartet that plays the theme of Pokemon Go and other classics. If you practice enough, you could be one of them! Breaking Winds sure is a great group of musicians.

Reason #5

Learning the bassoon is a truly rewarding experience. There are so many variables and quirks with it and the instrument is extremely difficult to play at first; but once you do learn it, you will love it. I can honestly say that this instrument has taught me diligence, patience, and an appreciation for music.

Reason #6

You will meet so many amazing people on your journey. Band and orchestra are like a family. You play your piece, and then yield to the next person. You have a part in a beautiful symphony and it would not sound quite right of you were not there.

Reason #7

You can authentically use the hashtag: #Baessoon

The Bassoon is a wonderful instrument and I am extremely grateful I have gotten the chance to learn it. Yes, it is quirky and weird, but its also beautiful and fun. You should learn to play the bassoon.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
