To the friend who helped me love myself again,

Thank you!

I was feeling so low. I hated myself and everything in my life. I felt confused and lost. I felt lonely. I didn’t have anywhere to turn or anyone to run to.

But, then you came back in to my life.

I had lost sight of who I was and what I had. You helped show me that I was not alone. You stood by my side. You did all you could to inspire and encourage me.

You let me talk through all of my problems with you until I felt better. When I talked, you listened. You gave me positive advice. You showed me how to overcome my situation.

You reminded me that I didn’t deserve to feel the way I felt. You showed me that I deserved to be happy.

You reminded me of all the wonderful things I did have in my life. You reintroduced me to the amazing friends I had in my life. You helped remind me of the friends who were encouraging, not draining.

You told me I was important. You told me I was valuable. You told me I deserved to love myself.

You showed me that there is nothing I can’t do if I try. Through your example, I knew that the sky was the limit. I learned that dreams are realities, if you work for them.

You are my hype person. I always feel better after I’ve spent time with you. I feel like I’m on top of the world when I have you there.

You showed me that a positive attitude can go a long way. Nothing is ever accomplished through negativity. You told me to cling to what inspired me to reach for happiness and push away the negativity that had been holding me down.

If I slipped up, you were there to catch me. If I started to think negatively about myself or my life, you would show me how amazing the world and its opportunities can be.

If someone else started to have a negative effect on me, you would pull me away. You would never let anyone harm my self-esteem. You told me that I don’t need negative people who didn’t make me feel valued.

You showed me the importance of recharging my energy. You let me know how vitally important self-care is.

All the lessons I learned about taking care of myself, loving myself, and living life to its fullest I learned from you, both through your words and your example.

It was encouraging to see the struggles you had faced and how amazingly you had overcome them. You were a warrior in your darkest time and came out of that pain as a new person. You became an inspiration to me. And, you were willing to share your new-found wisdom.

I am forever grateful for the person you are, the love you show, and the way you inspire.

With you, I was able to slowly crawl my way out of the pit I had put myself in. With you, I was able to learn how to love myself once again. With you, I was able to see the many ways in which I am richly blessed.

Thank you for being my friend.

Thank you for showing me how to love myself.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
